I can't believe this is the guy who is representing our field. I know of things Dr. Zwerling was involved in years ago. Does anyone else know anything about his history?? He was a (drug) user when i heard of him. I thought it was impossible to be head of anything with that in your past, especially since morphine has an 80% lifetime relapse rate.. meaning there's an 80% chance he could still be using. I would hate for that congressman to find out that information. When we elect one of our own to represent us, we need to make sure its someone with a clean past and better interviewing skills.. i mean if you ask me, its almost as if the congressman was mocking him at times. anyone else get that impression??... oh well, whatever you do, don't forward the following link to the congressman... or to any anesthesiologist. hate for one of them to get a hold of this information. Peace. Go CRNAs !!!!...

I'm confused. I thought CRNAs were already able to practice independently in all 50 states. Since we're on this topic, which other states limit CRNA practice?

Are you sure? I've been searching the PA state government's sites and can't find an update on the bill (from May). Say it isn't so!!

Dr. Zwerling is well respected as a recovered CRNA with over 16 yrs of sobriety and active with Philadelphia Recovering Nurses Association. See Advance for Nurses story: Forgive & Forget? Definitely think he can lead PANA successfully.
He is now Director of the University of Pennsylvania College of Nurse Anesthesia Program.

I've been to Harrisburg 2x in past month meeting with legislators over this bill & other nursing and healthcare legislation.

House Bill 1256 was just introduced on May 21, 2007 and is strengthening language already in our RN Practice Act to more clearly define CRNA standards. It has been referred to House Professional Licensing committee who is conducting hearings on the bill...hence transcript of one hearing posted above. No vote expected until fall session.

Current regs are under Rules and Regulations section § 21.17. Anesthesia.

Far, far too late on others seeing the video. It's all over "the other board", and has been forwarded numerous times to countless emails including anesthesiologists, legislators and congressmen. It has further galvanized those opposed to independent CRNA practice as an example of how far some CRNA's have gone beyond being objective. Self-serving statements that anesthesiologists aren't needed clearly don't set well with those with a more reasonable sense of reality. Well done Mr. Zwerling!

1) NC passes AA legislation and gov will sign
2) Louisiana legislation to allow pain management died
3) PA legislation died too
