It really depends on the size of your anesthesia department and your OB volume. For smaller facilities, 24 hours on is not that unusual, with the day off after call. But not all places can afford to let you have the day off, plus in a smaller hospital, you're probably on call for the OR as well as OB.
Our hospital does 18,000 deliveries a year. All of us, MD's and anesthetists, rotate through OB. We can run 5 concurrent C-Sections if we have to, so we may have as many as 8 anesthesia people just for OB on some days. And we always have at least three in-house 24/7/365, with an additional three available on call from home. We're lucky enough to have guys that like the night shift, so the rest of us only share call from home - after our elective schedule finishes around 9pm or so. Hey, it's better to be busy...
