Re: Nurse Anesthetist Shortage

Well, here in Houston, UT gets around 500 applications, interviews 50 and takes 9-15 students. Pretty stiff competition if you ask me. I don't think the numbers are that much of a stretch when you consider that there are far fewer NA programs than undergrad, PhD programs, or medical school.

I'm calling BS on that. If that were true, every single CRNA would have a 4.0 GPA and 95th percentile GRE scores.

23:1 is by far more competitive than any undergrad, medical, or PHD program on the face of the earth.

If it were really that high, then noway does anybody get accepted with less than a 3.8 GPA
I think that when they say 23:1 they don't mean perfect people; however, they just mean people who meet the MINIMUM GPA, MINIMUM GRE, MINIMUM experience and school required.

I don't think that's too far of a stretch either. There aren't really THAT many CRNA programs and I have no doubt the ratio could be that high.

You have to remember it's NOT all about GPA (or at least most places). It's the whole package.

One program recently reportedly accepted 11 applicants out of 300.

That's 27:1, according to my calculator.

If Betty Horton says that then you can take it to the bank. She was the Director of of the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs for many years and highly respected and very very knowledgeable regarding such matters.
