Hey guys,
You might be interested to hear that there is a new program in development at York College in York, Pennsylvania (where I grew up, about an hour south of Harrisburg). There's no info. on their website yet, but one of the undergrad nursing professors there told me that they are in the process of developing a new program. York College has a great reputation for its nursing program and York is a town with a low cost of living.

I'm just worried that there's gonna be so many anesthesia schools in Pennsylvania that I am going to have to move elsewhere when I graduate for a job!!

i hear Our Lady of the Lake college in baton rouge is in the process of opening a school also. albiet about 1.5 yrs too late for me.

yeah...york is starting one - york hospital will be their primary site... i spoke w/ the chief crna there (i am going to contract w/ them) and she didn't say exactly when it started but i know it is w/in the next 2 yrs.

Yes, York College of PA is in the process of setting up their new CRNA program. The last milestone they passed was to hire a Program Coordinator. They already have a master's program in adult health so it's just a matter of setting up the curriculum for the CRNA program.

Drexel University has a distance clinical site at York Hospital already!

York Anesthesia Associates is recruiting CRNAs for LARGE bonuses while they're still in school. 30K for 2 yrs/52K for 3 yrs, it's worth looking into and that way, Emerald, you'll be guaranteed work and have the benefit of the bonus to go along with it!

(I don't think you'll ever be desperate to find a job once you get out of school and pass your boards, anyway, do you?)

P.S. If you're really worried about it, go to www.gaswork.com and look at the plethora of options open to you once you become a CRNA!

Yeah I heard York Hospital was offering a great deal for CRNAs. Very tempting. Cost of living is dirt cheap too-- with a CRNA salary you could buy a mansion here! Unfortunately, I grew up here, and hate small town life! The nightlife in York STINKS-- there are 2 decent bars/clubs, unless you want to drive to Baltimore, Harrisburg, or Lancaster. The mall here sucks-- forget about shopping in the high end boutiques you can find in Philly. I went home to visit my parents this weekend and was in the mood for sushi-- I finally did manage to find ONE Japanese restaurant. Don't get me wrong, York is a fantastic place to buy a house and raise kids (did I mention that the schools here are really good?), but for someone who is only 23 (I'll be 27 when I finish school) York is kinda booooring.

Just goes to show you the strong presence of CRNA's in Pennsylvania. The more, the better as far as I am concerned. That will only make the CRNA profession stronger in PA, and hopefully more independent. I have heard a lot of PA CRNA's that work in hospitals complain about a lack of independent practice (meaning physician supervision) so as far as I'm concerned, the stronger the group, the better off we all are. If you're concerned about job opportunities after graduation, lock yourself into a deal now, so you have a job when you get out. I still think that 2 yrs from now there will be plenty of jobs for all of us. However if your skeptical, the option is always there.

I recently heard Cooper University Hospital in NJ is setting up there own program too (Besides the fact they are a clinical site for 3 or 4 other CRNA programs). With Jefferson starting up soon, that will make 8 CRNA schools in the Philly area alone! That said, there still seems to be plenty of need for CRNAs in the area. I don't think we will have to worry about finding a job!!

This is great news!!! Is there anyone to contact for more info yet? I have wanted to do this but have allowed other things to take priority. I work in critical care in a level 2 trauma facility and have done so for 7 years. I also have my ccrn. Presently I am working on my bs. I would appreciate any info, thanks!!!!!!
