most that i have found that don't have those fees require an "excellent" credit rating. or a co-signer with the same. has your school sent you financial aide info yet? my school did and it had a list of three loan sources that they suggested. one of them has no origination fee what-so-ever but it's a state of maine loan. so maybe your school can point you in the right direction. best of luck.

my school also had 3-4 places for me to get "living" money...but...the school set a limit...like - i was allowed an extra 9000.00...
bankone has an educational loan for graduates that is up to 30k - it is prime plus 1/2% - but you don't have to pay back for 4 years...so by starting to pay it back right after school (2.5yrs) that 1/2% really doesn't mean a thing...the thing i liked is you tell them how much you want - they just ask for an acceptance letter and a course roster for that semester (or year) and if you have a co-signer...you get your money in approx 3-4 wks...it was very easy..

uh.. not so fast on the Bank One loan. I compared their private education loan (Education One loan) with Citibank's equivalent. For someone with excellent credit, there IS no comparison. First of all, the interest rate right now was 5.75% variable compared to Citibank's 4.75% variable. The other major factor is origination fees. While with Citibank, there is NO origination fee, Bank One charges a HUGE 9.5% origination fee. That is just plain ludicrous. BTW, one plus for Bank One is that they don't verify your school information with your financial aid department. Therefore, you may get your money faster than with Citibank. But for 9.5% extra, I think waiting is worth it, don't you.

Anyone out there heard about any other lending institutions whose private education loan looked more competitive than this one I quoted from Citibank? Any info would be appreciated.

David

TCRN, I guess I would first ask you if you're asking about private loans or stafford loans.

but unfortunately citibank is one of the ones that my college uses - so they limited me.......that was the difference for me.

Don't know that I can help you much there. I used to work for Nelnet and I know that they waived all of their origination fees for stafford loans, but I do not know whether they do for their private loans or not. You can check them out at www.nelnet.net to find out.
