Nursing has gotten too far from its' roots. Between cutbacks and specialization, the nurses in my area, are only primarily responsible for medication and treatments. We have nutritionists, P.T., O.T., Speech therapy, phlebotomy, social workers, I.V. therapy, continuing care, clergy, respiratory therapists etc.
My best practice days were when I could sit down with a patient, review their information and discuss how all that interconnects and affects them. As well as talk about their hopes, fears and plans.
Does anyone remember having the time to give a patient respiratory P.T., then a backrub? Or how about holding a patient's hand while they're going through something scary? I miss those days.
Like everything else in the modern world, patient care is piecemeal. It's the fast food drive-thru of healthcare...
