Just a question out of curiosity to all the practicing CRNA's: What are your regular work schedules like? Do you usually work 9-5 Monday trough Friday? Or do you have the same flexible schedule options as nurses in other fields? I've always liked that in nursing you can work three 12 hour shifts and be done for the week. I was just wondering if that's even an option as a CRNA?

Well there are many different schedule. Many 7-3 no call, some 24 hr shift 2 times a week, 7-3 with call, varies from 1-2 to 1-9, or some like mine call every other day plus weekend and work until it is done.
Whatever you wnat or need it is there.

On most of the crna job sites I visit, they say that the typical hours for crna are 6am-3pm. I was wondering if it is possible or how likely is it to get later hours like 2pm-10pm or 3pm -11-pm?

I assume that those later hours would mostly apply to hospitals not

Also on a side note, how much on average does the malpractice insurance cost a crna on a yearly basis, I assume that some hospitals pick up this expense, am I right?

Any shift at any time frame is availiable generally, most hospitals pick up malpractice insurance.

For example; some of my peers in the hospital I work at work only 3-11. Some work 7a-7p, some 7-3, some work 11a-11p, some work 7a-5p. We all share weekends and only some of us do L&D (epidurals, spinals, Code Blue Team at night). It seems that if we all work together and take some shifts that we don't like, then everyone can get MOSTLY what they like. I prefer one 16 hr shift and one 24 hr shift so I can work 2 days a week. Being post a 24 hr shift right now, tho, I'm thinkin' I must be INSANE! IMHO

Quiigley, for those 16 and 24 hour shifts, on average, how much sleep do you get? You can give me a range, like, "0-4 hours, but mostly 1-2 or so". I don't know how you do it! My bf is an MD and does 24s and is doing a 30 tomorrow, but he normally gets a few hours to sleep...except for when he does his trauma rotations.

Why on earth would you want to have call every other day and work weekends?

On the 16 hr shifts, I get a 15 min break at around 0900, I usually get a 30 min break around 11:00 ish, then a last break at 1700-ish. That's it.
The 24 hr shifts, I get the above breaks (working the first 12 hrs in the main OR), then go to L&D and do epidurals, spinals for c-sec and all the code blue, ER intubations and ICU intubations. I get on average 2-4 hrs of a break somewhere between 1900-0630, never all together. I am usually wiped out the next day, altho I'm an idiot sometimes and decide to stay up and get things done around the house or errands. I'm a morning person, so its hard to fall asleep during the day for me.
