Hi all,

I'm 27 and am expecting to start my 2yr nursing program in the spring of 2005. I have a BBA in Logistics and am pursuing a CRNA career. This fall i'm going to get a job, study, and take the GRE.

What pre-Nursing Job would make me a better candidate for CRNA school when they look over my resume?

Will they even look at my experience this early before I'm an RN?

Is there a position that would teach me the ropes before I go into the MICU, SICU, or wherever to better position myself (ie CRNA's assistant)?

If the directors who review the applicants say that they won't even look at pre-nursing experience... I'll probably fall back on my degree and make more money or; Hopefully, someone could recommend a position that gives early students invaluable experience to stay ahead of the game and ahead of the competition.

You might want to consider a job in the ICU as a tech (if the hospital hires nursing students as techs) if you really want to become a CRNA. That way, you can work you way in the ICU as an RN when you graduate. And, while you are working on your BSN, you will be accumulating those precious years as an ICU nurse.

To be honest, I personally don't think that they look at your pre-nursing career when they try to consider you for a slot in a CRNA program. What they look for, is the year/s of experience as an RN in the ICU.

When I was interviewed last year, they didn't even ask what I did prior to becoming an RN. None of the people that I am in class with were asked about their previous jobs either.

Just focus on passing the RN boards, getting in the ICU and working hard towards a very good GPA and GRE score.

I guess it depends on the school. At one interview I went on they focused heavily on my previous biology background, but at the other school it wasn't even mentioned except to comment on my lackluster grade in o-chem!

I'm a senior NS, and I worked for a couple of years in an ICU as an aide. It was good experience, but hard (labor intensive) work. But don't forget to get excellent grades, work has a way of taking up valuable studying time. Nurse aide won't really matter when applying - excellent grades and ICU nurse experience are most important. Good Luck!
