Do any of you use these monitors or anything like them to monitor EEGs during surgery? I must admit this is way out of my field of expertise, I just happened to be watched a program on discovery channel where people were reporting awareness during surgery and had received paralytics, but not enough sedation/pain med or in one case the gaseous inhalation equipment was broken. I would like to hear anyone's experiences or research on this subject. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone! This is my first post. I hope to become a CRNA in the future.

But speaking of experience....how about personal experience - being the patient.....

After the birth of my last child in August 2003, I had a postpartum tubal ligation performed. They had left the catheter in from the epidural used during L&D the day before - and then redosed it. I was sedated in the OR as well. I remember becoming aware of someone pulling on right right F. tube. I could picture him standing there pulling this thing and yanking and such. And it HURT! But I could not open my eyes or speak to save my life. Let's just say that I was definitely partaking of meds in recovery. And the strangest thing is....for 2 months following the surgery....I experienced pain on my right side.....but NEVER my left side.

Don't think this is an off-the-wall question, but could there be a correlation to the awareness of the pain during surgery while under - memory - and pain experienced after surgery? Something to ponder.

this is for practicing crna's mda' or srna's out there. in my limited experience i noticed that md's tend to treat elevated bp and hr with beta blockers and are less free with the narcs. crna's tend to treat these with narcs or more gas. has anyone else out there noticed this or is this just my imagination.
and do you think that this has any affect with awareness?
please do not construe this as to say md's have more awareness pts than crna's.
i know this sounds like i'm saying md's have more awareness, but i'm sure this is not the case. it was just 2 thoughts that came together at one time.
