anesthesia assistants

can anyone tell me if anesthesia assistants are currently "Ok to practice," or are AAs still in the conceptual stage, being discussed by the ASA?
I'd appreciate any information...didn't find any on the AANA website....
thanks
austin

They can practice in some states, I think 16. You can find information at the emory university web site or the case western reserve website. These are the only two programs in the country.

Thanks, smiling.....
I also found this web site; http://www.anesthetist.org/index.html
Apparently they have a national organization. I've E'd them for info about where they practice, and by whom they are certified, etc.
My interest is sparked because I've heard they are being used here in my town; the town I cannot work in because I'm just a CRNA....and therefore not qualified, according to the "MD-only" anesthesia group.
Truthfully, I'm not sure how much I really want to know at this point.....could cause me great mental anguish!
Thanks again
austin
