Thumbs up After You Finish Anesthesia School

Congratulations on your boards. Now here's a list of things you need to do-

1. Start your new job
2. Go to a state meeting and volunteer for a committee
3. Donate to the AANA Foundation to help the students that are following after you.
4. Donate to CRNA-PAC to help fund the fight to preserve practice rights at the federal level. Donate to your state PAC to fund the fight at the state level.
5. Be a clinical and/or didatic instructor as a way of honoring those who taught you.
6. When your AANA dues notice comes- PAY IT! IT's the best bargain for the profession.
7. Spend your CE dollars wisely- use some to support your state orgainzation, some to support schools-don't send it all to the MDs.
8. When you get a ballot (state or national AANA) vote, if you don't know all the candidates find someone who does and listen to them or at least vote the races you know.

Always remember the Anesthesia Pioneers that fought year after year to get us where we are today. Honor the past, contribute to the present, and build for the future!!!!! Always remember you are part of a profession built on caring for patients and not just working a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I agree that all these things are important, I think that during the first year or so after school I'll be devoting a lot of energy to the new job! Time-intensive stuff like joining a committee may have to wait a bit.

Don't wait-there are committees that are not that time intensive. If you wait a year the year quickly becomes 2 or 3 longer!!!!!!!

Most excellent post, CRNA DNSc!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll give you new grads a year, but DNSc is right, it is very easy for that single year to expand into several years.

So, yep, if you're in my state, I'll take you up on that reminder thing.

If I did all that in one year, esp. after finishing CRNA school, I think I would burn out for sure. You're intentions are well though, and I see your point.

In comparison to the anesthesia program you are currently in- doing these things are a piece of cake!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the OP and Loisane...once you get in the habit of inactivity (as far as professional memberships etc...) it is really hard to get back into the swing of it...and it is so detrimental to our existence. How much would I have loved it if our previous graduates donated a small amt of money to help us all financially - so that the AANA conferences weren't such a huge burden on the already fiscally strapped SRNA!! I hope that our class remembers this and will each sponser a student some money each year for this purpose!
anyway - i plan to follow the advice!

Each one, teach one, help one- that is what countless CRNAs have done over the years. Andrea, I look forward to your future contributions- never forget the feeling right now!

THe battles continue- Florida may have been overturned but the Restrictive Regulations are going to effect in New Jersey, MDs in North Carolina have introduced legislation to allow AA's and adding supervision requirements for CRNA. The names and the facesmay change- the battles remain the same!!!!!!
