Any Research College of Nursing Accel program students or grads out there?

I'm starting the Research College of Nursing Accel. program this August (2006). I've already met one person off the list who is attending. Any others? What have you heard about the program.. other than it is intensive? I haven't heard anything bad.. so I'm amped about that. They've been making nurses for 100 years so they must be doing something right.

Anyone taking patho this summer?

Any instructors out there lurking

Re: Any Research College of Nursing Accel program students or grads out there?

I also start the accelerated BSN in August 06. This summer I am taking Pathophysiology and 4 other classes to meet the residency requirement for the program.

If the credits at Rockhurst were not reinbursed, I would be a little annoyed with the requirement. But they are, plus having 15 credits crammed into two months should keep me off the streets for awhile.

Oh, I just started studing for the Pathophys class yesterday. It took me about 5 hours to finish my study guide for chapter two. I tend to overkill with the amount and depth of the information I put in my study guide, so I could trim that down to about 3 hours per guide if necessary.

3 Chapters a week X 5 hours per guide + 5 hours of actual studying = the recommended 20 hours a week to spend on the class.

Are you using the study guide that the instructors wrote or the one that from the authors.

Have you gotten on webct yet? The first orientation was Thursday, I was there. The next are on Monday before and after the lunch. I recommend the earlier session so that you can sign up for a preferred test taking time.. Al tests are on monday, given in one hour blocks. You hhave to sign up for a slot. Since I was there Monday I got to sign up for all of the tests at 4.

The discussions look cool on Webct too. The instructors are really engaged in this course.

I have a bunch of yard and house work to do.. and then time to get studying for real.

See ya and best of luck with your classes this year.

The thing that is going to be tricky is that I have two classes during the second session that are on Monday during the entire testing time. I'll going to have to talk to the instructors before hand to determine which class I can miss an hour from.

BTW, I figured that was you (for some reason).

Re: Any Research College of Nursing Accel program students or grads out there?

I graduate from the program this August. The first 6-8 weeks are the hardest. The program is being changed some from our class to yours. It should be a lot better. My only complaint is that there was way too much community work (due to it being connected with Rockhurst), but from my understanding that is one of the things they are changing for the AO students. I would start looking at the test taking skills because the test from here on out will be unlike any other test. Also it will be impossible to read everything they tell you to, so if you are a person that reads every detail plan on NOT having a life at all. Rick Henson over at Rockhurst is a great resource to help you focus your studying. For Pharm fill out the study guides or a chart with all the drugs you will need to know and study that. A lot of those questions are about the side effects an dhow the drug works in the body.

I hope this information helps. Every program has it's faults but over all I really enjoyed the program, plus you are finished in a year.

Thanks for the information, Wilson.

Maybe you can provide some information on the "critical thinking" test that we have to take during orientation [mid August]. Thanks.

I realize the program isn't perfect. Nothing involving humans ever is. One of the things I like though is that I've gotten the impression that the staff are at least wanting to make it as good as can be. That's all any student can ask for.

Re: Any Research College of Nursing Accel program students or grads out there?

The first initial critical thinking test covers a bunch of differrent areas like grammer, math , microbiology, A&P, etc... It it primarily assessing where your knowledge is when you come into the program. Then you will continue after Health Management 2 and 3 to take what is called the HESSI (SP??) Test, which is who writes the first test. Finally at the end you will take an exiting exam which will test how you critical thinking skills imporved. You have to pass the exiting exam with a score of 850 or greater on a 1500 scale to be finished with the program. You really can not study for the first one, unless you want to reveiw your micro, chemistry, and A&P. But remember unless they have changed it this one does not count.
