you can choose to have your clinicals for management at a different hospital all together if you commute (mine were in Pontiac). All clinicals were during the day-except synthesis. You have to work whatever shift your preceptor works. Mine happened to be days. Other people were afternoons and midnights. That wasn't until last semester though. Oh, and community hours depend on your placement. I was at headstart. I am not from Genesee, I used to live in Oakland. Now I live in Macomb and work in Wayne. Guess I need to hit up Grand Rapids and Greater Lansing CAT

Just wanted to say "hi", I'm a junior student in the Traditional BSN Progam at U-M Ann Arbor. Flint, Ann Arbor, Dearborn but all in the U of M umbrella of universities
How is the Flint program? What are your thoughts, pros, cons? What is the breakdown for hours spent in clinical compared to hours of lecture?
Regards,
Michigan Man 09

I'd love to learn more about becoming a nurse extern, especially if I don't get in this time around. Are you applying anywhere else?

RamaMama,
Sorry for the delay. I am at St. Joe's in Pontiac. It is a teaching hospital so they have a pretty good extern program. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get in as an extern I (basically a nurse aide). You would have no problem getting in once you have completed a Med/Surg.
rotation in nursing school (At this status you become an Extern II). Other hospitals may be different. It always helps if you know a nurse at the hospital where you want to work. At the very least, you could go to the nearest hospital and inquire about an externship with human resources. Fill out an app. and they may hire you right away, or they may wait until you begin school. If you'd be willing to commute to Pontiac, PM me and I will see what kind of openings they have for externs.
I have also applied to several out of state nursing schools. If I don't get accepted to UM Flint, or the other programs I have applied to, I might begin taking the courses for OU's accelerated track, apply to Physician's Assisstant programs, or begin an EMT-Paramedic program.

I got my letter for the 2nd degree program. Consideration of my application has been deferred until the end of the current semester. They want to see my Microbiology grade and proof that I have enrolled in the CHM 252 equivalent. I wonder how many people are in this position. Its better than a "no" but I am not looking forward to waiting several more months to find out.

Hey Brian,
How did micro go for you? Have you heard anything more from UM Flint? Are you taking any spring classes? Where did you take Patho? I'm taking it this spring along with research in nursing, at UM Flint.
Take care,
Rachele

Hey Rachele,
Micro went smoothly and I got an A! I have heard encouraging news from advisors and it looks like I should have a spot in the program. I find out for sure on May 31st. I am taking Pharmacology right now at UM Flint (NSC 233). It is a 7 week class so it is going to be tough but I like the professor, and I will be very glad to get it out of the way before the program begins. I am also taking Biochem at OCC ,which... sucks. Chemistry is not one of my favorites. I took Patho at MSU in several years ago, so I will probably need to brush up on it before fall.
Are you taking any courses in the summer semester? Is there an orientation, or any other info. that I am missing out on bc of my situation? I feel like I send a lot of emails to the nursing dept. and the feedback has not been that great. Good luck with everything.

Hello, "Flynner" (Brian, right?) -
I am also in the U of M Flint Accelerated Program...we must be in the same Pharmacology class together: Tuesday and Thursday, 4:30 - 7:15 (but we seem to actually finish at 6:45!).
Please let me know if there's any info I have that I could share with you re: the program.

Hey. Yeah, its Brian and I am in that same class. Congrats on getting in to the program. What have you done so far to prepare? Is there an orientation scheduled, did you complete the background check already...? I was told that I am probably going to be admitted into the program but the nursing dept. has not given me any additional info. So, anything that you could tell me about it so far would likely be news to me.

Hi Brian,
That is great news that you most likely have a spot! Since you are working in a hospital you probably already have a lot of the things you need before starting the program, such as CPR for health professionals, TB test, Tetanus shot. You may want to go to the nursing dept website and print off the health form, that will let you know everything you need to complete by the July 15th deadline. As soon as you get the acceptance you can fill out the background check info online, which is very quick and simple, Maris can give you the form with all the info on it. At the orientation they gave us info about uniforms, which is basically navy scrubs and white lab coat. We need to complete a 6 hours computer training course at Hurley before beginning clinicals late August. We were assigned our sections for clinicals and courses for fall semester, but we can't register until July 15 so you have time to get all that info from Maris. You'll have to let me know how pharm goes, I have to take that in the fall, which is why I am taking research now. Take care and keep us posted!

Hi, Brian: Looking at my notes from the 2nd degree program meeting...
- what RamaMama said, plus
- The basic nursing skills course will be offered in August: 4,5,6 and the skills exam on 11, 12,13, 7 - 11:30 a.m.
- If you've had a physical exam in the last year, that's fine, if not, get one and provide copies of immunizations. Mine have disappeared over years, and the doctor did a titre instead, plus I had a tetanus and Hepatitis B vaccine. It's a 3 part thing; at least the first dose by 7/15/08. TB test also required.
- You'll need to provide proof of health insurance, and your CPR certification
- Dress code is navy blue. No skin allowed! Tee shirts under v-neck uniforms. Patches in the shoulder, white leather shoes, men to shave daily or have neatly trimmed facial hair.
- I think we're guinea pigs, actually. I don't think they've done more than one, if that, completely accelerated 2nd degree program.
- If you write or call Maris Gilles always note that you're trying out for the BSNX2 program.
- A social/get together/pinning ceremony is planned for August; hopefully more info will be available then.
- The background check was very easy, cost depends on how many counties you've lived in, I think. Results were back in a few days.
Good luck!
