SC4 vs Macomb

Has anyone done any research regarding the nursing programs between these two colleges? I live in St. Clair County but I am pondering going to Macomb even though it will cost more money and will be a farther drive. I have done a year of prerequisites at SC4 but still have a few left. I will be done after this next year and will be applying for the RN program this fall. I hear that Macomb just goes by your last 12 credit hours GPA regardless of what classes they are from. I also heard that while in the nursing program at Macomb that you are allowed to pass a class with a C rather than a B at SC4. I also heard that at SC4 that if you do get below a B that you are out of the nursing program and have to reapply the following year while at Macomb if you get below a C you can just retake the class and not be out of the nursing program. I don't want to sound like my grades are not important to me, they are! I don't plan getting below a B but I am 41 and do not really have time to wait around in case for some reason I really struggle with a class. Does anyone have any input? I am so confused with what to do????

Re: SC4 vs Macomb

I didn't apply to any other schools so I can't compare them for you, but this might help.
Macomb does currently go by your last 12 credits no matter what they are, but they are changing it to your pre-req GPA to be more fair. I can't remember if they said for class of 09 or 10 or even if they know. As for being able to get a C, they said the minimmum grade allowed is a 78%, so it's not that much better than SC4's standards. This info comes from our orientation last week.

It's nice to see someone my age on these boards. I was beginning to think I was the oldest. I am just curious why you would consider Macomb over St. Clair. Both have excellent reputations. I applied to Macomb this year and did not get accepted. I am sure you have heard how crazy competetive it is. I also applied to St. Clair, took the hesi and was told that I needed HE101. The counselor at St. Clair told me that I didn't need it because I had the equivalent class from Baker. I was pretty mad, because I would have got in. If I were you I would stick with St. Clair. Why drive such a long way when you don't need two.

Re: SC4 vs Macomb

Thank you for the posts! They made me reconsider the thought of going to Macomb. For one thing it is the extra cost with being out of district and then there is the fact that the drive is quite far and with gas prices and all.... It is so confusing with this nursing program thing! Sometimes I wonder if I really have it in me and the the next minute I know I can do it. WOW.. I haven't even made it in the program yet. Maybe that is the hardest thing. Can I even make it???? Would if I do and it is too hard??? Does anyone else feel this way or am I crazy????????????

I feel exactly the same way. I wonder if I really know what I want. If I do get into the program, is that something I really want to do? I think because I am 41 I feel I am running out of time and just want to start working as soon as possible. I think waiting to get into a program is the hardest part.

Re: SC4 vs Macomb

jabraham99,

I am 43 and just starting the Nursing Program at Macomb (hopefully in Aug). Don't give up !!!! I have read lots of posts from people that have applied many times.

BTW, when I went to orientation, I was sure that I would be the oldest person in the room, but there were some ladies and gentlemen who definitely at least ten years on me.

Also, don't just go by driving distance to the school; you need to consider where the clinical sites will be. There are semesters you will be at clinical more often than at the college. For example peds is at Royal Oak Beaumont, Children's downtown and SJ Detroit. Those are a pretty far drive for you!
