Re: Need help preparing for the Hesi A2 Entrance Exam

linux7,
What subjects were you tested on? There are different HESI tests. I'm scheduled to take the HESI A2 in March which covers anat/physio, chem, vocab, rdg, and math. I need to score at least a 90 to be really competitive in the program I'm applying for. Tell me your secret! I also bought the HESI review guide and flashcards. But if your test didnt include chem and anat/physio thats totally different from my test. It seems like most people dont have to take the portion.

The program at in MCC in Michigan dose not test for AP and Chem. We only had vocab, reading, grammar and math. Math is very simple the stuff that you did in 1st to 5th grade (there is a soft calc in the testing software that you can use), reading is very simple just keep track of what you read and answer the question, grammar is also simple but can be tricky so just go over the errors that the book shows you. vocab is very simple top, its not medical terms but it is general english vocabs that doctors tend to use. The book dose a good job with the terms. AP and Chem part cant be that difficult. I would suggest reading your class notes and the review book.
I got a 93% and yes you probably want to do better then that as every year it becomes more and more difficult to enter a program.

Re: Need help preparing for the Hesi A2 Entrance Exam

I took the HESI A2 entrance exam this morning, after weeks of preparation and anxiety over how I would perform. Overall, I found it to be much easier than anticipated. I was prepared for 8 sections, ranging from A&P to grammer but it turned out we only had to take the Math, Reading Comp, Grammer and Vocab tests. Each segment consisted of 55 questions and a 50 minute time limit. I found there to be plenty of time for each section so don't rush.
I've never been strong in math and it's been 13 years since high school but I used the Barron's study guide and found the example tests and explanations to be right on. You should be prepared to add, subtract, and multiply fractions, and know your ratios and common household measurements like how many ounces in a quart and gallon.
It's also worth noting that the Vocab section included a number of questions that require some knowledge of A&P. For example, knowing the difference between anterior and postierior, proximal and distal, etc. Nothing too heavy, just general A&P terms.
Overall, my cumulative score was 88 but I don't know if that is above or below average for the testing group I was in. It's probably middle of the pack. I just hope it was good enough for consideration into this nursing program!
Many thanks to everyone that has read this, I hope you found it helpful.

Hey I am preparing to take the Hesi A2 test before I start clinicals in the spring. I will be taking the test in mid-September Does anyone have any advice for me? I am sort of worried about it. I ordered a study book of some kind and I will get it this week hopefully. I am supposed to be tested over Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and general knowledge, Grammar, and Anatomy and Physiology. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would say start by relaxing. It really is not a hard exam, and the more relaxed you are, the better you will do. Go over the Hesi study guide and do all of the practice problems. This should show you what areas you need to work on. If you do have trouble spots, you can pick up a grammar/math or whatever book up and study from there. I didn't take the A&P portion but the study guide was dead on for the other parts and it is the only thing I studied.

Well other than the book I bought, I don't have a study guide. The school just gave me what sections would be on the test and then how the scores are calculated. I keep reading about a study-guide, is there one that everyone just looks at?

Hesi puts out their own study guide. It's like $30 or so. I still have mine from Dec, if you private message me your address I can send it to you.
