If U Had to Choose

Which school would you go to Oakland University or University of Detroit? I'm having a hard time deciding which school to attend for the Second Degree Nursing Program, any suggestions?

Im assuming you mean U of D Mercy. I'd go there if given the choice. I hear they have an excellent program.

Have you checked the tuition? That alone may help you decide, LOL. U of D is oxygen sucking expensive.

Oakland University.. This school accept students around the year, students can choose either full time or part time, students can repeat nursing classes. U of D mercy and OU are the same nursing program, results in same RN licensure, but U of D mercy's tuition is twice as much as OU.

Thanks guy's for your response. I guess I was looking at the all the pre-req's at Oakland U verses U of D Mercy! Thought I'd finish U of D's faster. I guess I'll have to see if U of D Mercy has rolling admission, someone told me they did, I'm not sure though.

Re: If U Had to Choose

Hello, eventually I plan on going to U of D for a BSN completion. Yes U of D is almost double in cost, you have to weight out all of your options. My self I found the pre-reqs worked towards my advantage, and also talk a nursing counselor to talk about financial aid, scholarships, and grants. If your not from a extremely high income household, they offer pretty good discounts. Don't just jump into a program- take time and look in to it... Good Luck.

Your right they are twice the cost, but they don't have a rolling admission like OU does. They're 2nd Degree program only starts in May, OU has 3. The pre'req's work to my advantage also, but I don't like that they only start once a year.

Re: If U Had to Choose

They are both good schools, but you trully have to weigh out your personal pros and cons for each school and talk to both schools about any little thing you can come up with. You dont want any negative surprises down the road. You have to Pick the school that is right for you. What one person thinks is right, may be completely wrong for you.
My advice is check them both out, before you just jump in. And if your still are having trouble deciding, take classes that will transfer to either program.

Two other things to consider: OU's accelerated program is NOT at the Rochester campus, it's at the Macomb extension campus, and OU also tracks you to a specific hospital for your clinicals depending on the semester you start.

Re: If U Had to Choose

Actually, the OU program classes depend on what program you are in....I'm in for fall and my classes will be in Dearborn through Oakwood hospital. My friend who just started this May, her classes are at St. John's in NE Detroit. I'm pro-OU. For the tuition, I thought they have laid everything out so clearly, and I didn't have to take many pre-reqs (and I have a business degree, didn't really have science classes, and I would have needed more at U of D). It took me one full school year to do my pre-reqs, going every semester. But now I have the summer off to chill, and also to get prepared for my program....I'm very excited!

One more thing to add....U of D nursing teachers, look up their ratings on ratemyprofessor, and compare them to OU's. It may help with a decision.
