Hello everyone!

Hoping to get some ideas from you fine Michigan RNs!

My husband and I are planning on moving to the Eastern side (Detroit-ish area) of Michigan. I currently live in Grand Rapids, and work at Spectrum Health-Butterworth. Looking for some advice on an ICU to work in on the east side of the state. I have 2 years critical care experience, the first year @ Covenant in Saginaw, MI and the 2nd here in GR. I have worked in a MICU the whole time, but would consider SICU or CTICU as well. Any advice is appreciated.

Sidenote: I am currently applying for CRNA schools in the Detroit area, and have found I can receive a 25% tuition discount if I work in the following institutions: Providence, St. John, Henry Ford, and Trinity. So any insider info on these hospitals would be especially appreciated. For approximately 10-15,000 discount, I'll work wherever

The big issue is where will you actually be living? Commutes can be terrible in the winter months. I would get that pinned down first.

For anesthesia school, you should look more towards the CVICU aspect of the ICUs. Beaumont also has an excellent program and they have an anesthies school affiliated with them. Not sure where you are considering applying to that will give you a discount with those hospitals.

We are looking at homes in the Warren/Royal Oak/Hazel Park area. U of D gives discounts, but only for their NP programs (too bad)! So that's not really a factor anymore. I am thinking either Henry Ford or Beaumont would be for me. I'll have already applied in the fall for CRNA school, but I know more good experience certainly won't HURT. Any additional info anyone has on either of these (or other) hospitals, let's hear it Thanks!

I have worked at all that you have mentioned plus many more. Have not heard of Trinity, which group did they buy out? It was not there when I left.

I would also look at Troy Beaumont, it will be a little easier on the commute. All of my friends that work in surgery and anesthesia are very happy with the facility.

HF can be a pain to get to in traffic, and with bad weather in the winter. Parking is not the best there, and is off campus. Unless that has changed recently.

St. Joes's in Pontiac would also be a good choice to check out and one of my favorites.

It's a little west for you, but St Joes in Ann Arbor has several ICU's and is attacked to a level 1 trauma ctr. I work there (not ICU) and love the organization.

Thanks for your replies.

I have been checking out the area hospitals and have it narrowed down to 2: Beaumont in Royal Oak and Henry Ford. I think I'll end up going with Beaumont, pay is better, drive wouldn't be as bad. Not sure yet, though. I am planning on doing a 4 hour shadow at each after I interview.
