Failed Net

Hey you guys, just wanted to vent a little. I took the net test and failed the reading miserably. I passed the math portion with a 93%. I studied my butt off but obviously wasn't good enough. I bought the book and studied questions off of HFCC site and thought I was fully prepared but when I saw the test it seemed totally different. Im a little discouraged but I will press on, even though Im so nervous now. Any words of encourage or anything I can do to better prepare myself? Any study guides out there that would come close to the type of questions on the reading part?

Re: Failed Net

Did you take the NET at HFCC? If so, there are resources (and people) in the Learning Lab who can help you prepare for the next one.

You really, really have to be able to discern what an inference is, what the main idea is, all that, when you read the paragraph. Sometimes, the paragraph itself is dull, dull, dull and contributes to your not doing well.

I failed the reading portion when I took the NET the first time. I got the black bear reading selection, ugh. The next time, my reading selection was on infection, MUCH more interesting to a nursing student!!

Go back and study some more, making sure you know exactly what each idea means, then take it again. Really work on it, because if you fail three times at HFCC, you're out.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't pass the reading but you are not alone. A gal in my pathology class had told me she was taking it for the 4th time. My words of advice to her was to read the answers first. Then when you read the paragraphs, you'll have some sort of idea what to look for. She called me a couple of weeks ago & thanked me. She passed!
I didn't study except for the math. I kind of skimmed through the reading part in some NET practice book I borrowed from a friend. I just happened to read that part & it seemed to work for me. Try that if you didn't on your first try.
Good luck!

Re: Failed Net

100% absolutely great advice! Most ace the math and fail the reading. (I was the opposite!) It is measuring your 'scientific aptitude' to reading comprehension. Just read read read until you 'get' what an inference, main idea, conclusion and can do it in your sleep! Use the resources available if u are still stuck; maybe they can give u a different way to analyze the reading that will make better sense.

Good Luck - u can do it!
