Talking Anyone buy nursing supplies yet?

Hi all Fall '07'ers! Gosh, I'm really spending some serious cash on all this stuff! I perused the thread about what we need most and that has been very helpful in getting my 'study room' together.

I bought some things @ Target and plan to check out Walmart. I've asked around to people I know that are in the health field and got a stethoscope and scissors! I ordered an all-in-one 3 color click pen off Amazon. I don't want to worry about pen caps!

Meeting my classmates 8/13!

How's it going for the rest of you?

Re: Anyone buy nursing supplies yet?

I have not actually started purchasing items yet, but I do have a list. I’m passing it out to all of my family members and asking them to contribute as they can because to be honest, I’m hurting financially. I can handle the basics, but I would love an engraved Littmann Classic II S.E. stethoscope, a PDA for clinical and to keep up with my soon to be busy schedule, and a digital recorder so that I can tape lectures. There's so much and so little time, but I'm sooo excited to get started with the first semester.

Re: Anyone buy nursing supplies yet?

yeah.... I posted a list of supplies and stuff on my website: alltsonm.tripod.com/nursing.htm I kept my stethoscope up until my first week as a real nurse and it was promptly stolen. Another student had his "disappear" his first month in nursing school so enjoy buying an expensive stethoscope. Now I won't pay more than $20 and am getting a screaming yellow one from e-bay.... until then, Beaumont freebies will have to suffice (can't be worth more than $15 and are really weak but do the job on my unit).

PDA's have a tendency to walk too so keep yours hooked on your keychain or belt or whatever.

Holy S**t! That is some serious cash! But I think once I purchase my books, I'll be around the same. I also found a nice ergonomic + lumbar support chair I want @ Sam's. With this butt sitting so often, I need comfy and for $60, it's worth it.

About the same as NBMom1225, almost 1400. Got the uniforms, supplies, PDA and most of my books. Just need two more books that weren't in, the nurse pac and a bag to fit all this stuff in.

Would you mind itemizing that $1400? I was figuring around $500 or so for texts, $200 minimum for uniforms (if I only get one set of scrubs to start with), $45 for a stethoscope (I am starting with the Littman Lightweight). Now you've got me wishing I was a better saver . I don't suppose that amount includes tuition either ?

Nope, tuition is not included...here's the break down:

$221.50 Uniforms (2 sets scrubs, 1 lab coat, 3 patches)
$95.39 Shoes (2/$90 deal on New Balance...heard they were good!)
$886.05 Books (incl. all required and recommended for 1500's & 1600's)
$158.62 PDA software (Nursing constellation & Taber's)
$21.40 Watch (my old one died a month ago anyway)
$54.62 Supplies (binders, paper, pens, highlighters ect)

Total so far= $1,437.58...and that's not counting the NSO malpractice insurance I'll be signing up for in a few weeks, the Nurse Pak, protective eyewear, and anything else I may not yet have remembered to get. I was fortunate to receive a really nice stethoscope and BP cuff as gifts from my family...that would have been another chunk of change. Hope this helps!

Re: Anyone buy nursing supplies yet?

Regarding the PDA's....I've never seen one in use at HFCC....no one has them. You can get by without them.

Don't buy too many fancy folders!! They so don't matter after the first month, LOL. You'll need your money for gas and coffee!!!

Did you pay full price for brand new texts? That is quite a book bill ! I think I am just going to wear the white tennies I have already. They don't get much use and look new. I'm glad I have 4 more months to get this stuff lined up.
