union vs non-union hospital

Wondering what is your opinion on union vs non-union hospital.

I am a new grad and got an offer from a non-union hospital. I will be getting an offer from my current employer which has a union.

Would love to have your input.

Thank you.

Re: union vs non-union hospital

I wish I could help. I currently work in a union hospital and just got offered a job in a nonunion hospital. I'm not sure what to do. Both are in Boston. I've been a nurse about a year. From working in a union hospital, new people are low man on the totum poll. I work any and all shifts. Two 12s and two 8s. Sometimes switching from night to day and back again in one week. New people are last to get summer vacation and first to work holidays (on my floor). Also if you want to move ahead like get a job in an ICU, everything depends on senority.

However I have been told in nonunion you get more patients and often make less money. I really don't know. I kind of think regardless of union or not it depends on your manager and coworkers and culture of the hospital.

Re: union vs non-union hospital

I left the union hospital and went to work with a non-union hospital. I find good people at both hospitals but there's no recognition for people who try to do their personal best at a union hospital. I also find that managers can make decisions quicker in a non-union hospital.

However, in defense of union hospitals, nurses do have this sense of protection by the union like having a big brother to take care of you. I didn't have a big brother and had to learn to take care of myself my whole life.

Good luck with your decision. Let us know how everything works out.
