STCC anyone?

Hi, I was just wondering if there were any other students (or alumni or instructors) from Springfield Technical Community College on here.

Re: STCC anyone?

Well gee, people don't start answering after I've already graduated! ha ha

I didn't take the entry HESI, I think mine was the last class before they started that. I did take the exit HESI though, and did pretty good. Well within the acceptable range, and had no problem passing the NCLEX with 75 questions. So I think that STCC did a great job preparing me for it.

Re: STCC anyone?

Graduated last May, 07 from STCC...
It was 2 years of absolute HELL once I got into the program. At every clinical rotation we did, we got numerous compliments from hospital staff at how prepared we were. As long as you make nursing school your very first priority (this goes for any school), you can get through it. There are some fantastic instructors, a small setting, and I made some lifelong friends in that crummy looking school. Looking back, I am so glad I didn't go anywhere else. STCC makes you score much higher on the HESI exit exam than any other school I have found, but it made NCLEX a breeze (a horrible breeze!). Best of luck to you! allnurses.com is a good resource throughout school, by the way.

Re: STCC anyone?

HI All

I am new to this site.

I have some questions about STCC. Hopefully some of you can help!!

I am really interested in their nursing program and I am in the process of getting everything together by thier deadline of March 1st. I am taking medication calculations now online. Just took the midterm last night and got a 93%. So I am super thrilled about that. I am also taking Eng Comp I online. I got an A in A & P I and General Psych I got a B. I just took the HESI today and got an 80%. Yes, I passed, but barely. I did really well on the math, vocab, grammar and reading comprehension, scored in the 90's for all of that. A & P I got a 72% I was not happy. I took A & P I in 2005. Biology is where I did horrible. I got a 56%. I was not expecting such a hard A & P and biology questions.
My questions are:
1. Should I consider taking the HESI exam again? Do they take the better one of the two scores or just the last test score I took. When reviewing applicants do they look at the Hesi scores first and take the top scorers and weed out from that. It says I need a 77% to pass which I did. But would it be beneficial to try and study up on Bio and A & P and retake for a better shot.
2. Is there really 600 applicants?? and only like 60-100 spots for the program. Please tell me I am wrong. If that the case there is no way I am getting in for the fall.
3. How long till you find out if you get accepted?

I know I have more question but I am drawing a blank right now.
Anything anyone can tell me about the STCC nursing program would be very helpful.
Thanks
Angela

Re: STCC anyone?

Hi Angela!
Graduated from STCC in May. I have a feeling we are not talking about the Memphis nursing program now that I see that the originator of this thread is from Mass. If you are talking about Memphis, go ahead and email me, I'll tell you all I know. For Memphis, you sound like a great candidate. We too have 600 candidates, and many have yet to properly complete everything in the first place. So they don't even get considered. Good luck, I think you'll get in, just turn in all the paperwork on time! Let me know if by chance it's Southwest Tennessee Comm College...

Re: STCC anyone?

Hello.
I'll answer more by echoing what was said to me when I asked these questions two years ago to the school. (I'm a senior finishing up at STCC)

The admission process is centered around grades in all your previous ("pre-reqs") classes. I went in applying with what they said was about 900 other applicants and made it in with about 100 others. I also had nothing worse than an A- (3.86GPA to be exact) in anything I took and had ALL the classes they wanted to see done by graduation done.
I seem to remember the HESI score being mentioned as a second means of admission regarding grades, but I would ask someone at the school to be sure.
Also, I think I found out about acceptance around early April, maybe mid april, but things may have changed as well.

There's certainly a good reason so many apply -- it's no secret it's the best program you could be part of. The lectures and clinicals are jam packed with learning and the professors all around are a giant wealth of knowledge backed by years of experience; all there to make you the best nurse you can possibly be when you graduate.

Good luck!

Re: STCC anyone?

Kaila, Yes I am talking about STCC in Massachusetts. Thanks anyway. I wish it was the one in TN, sounds like I would have a better shot getting into there.

HI iballjay, Thanks for the reply. I bet you can't wait for the next few months to go by. Thanks for the info. The pre reqs I have done, I got pretty good grades but again I only have A&P I, General Psych done that they will see. Oh plus my medication calcs class which will be done by March 1st. I am taking Eng Comp now but they wont see that in March. So someone with more classes done will look better. What do you think? I plan on taking some classes in the summer. I have the first semester of Nursing done and almost the second semester of classes done, they will be done by that time. I know yesterday when I was about to take the Hesi, there were people applying that haven't even taken the medication calculations class yet. So I am thinking that those right off the bad will be taken off the list.
I am just so frustrated. I want this so bad!!
