Considering career change.........
|
|
Hi gang,
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I'm looking at a career change, after nearly 30 years in EMS. This would include a change of work regions, and my desire is to remain in the medical field, this time in a definitive care setting.
To get the ball rolling, I'm told I may be able to parlay my EMT skills (with EKG/Phlebotomy training) into a Critical Care/Patient Care Technician (the same job apparently has several titles regionally).
If anyone in Central/Western MA has any info at all on this type of transition (or has done so themselves) I would appreciate any information/advice you can impart.
I'm 49 years old, the son and gransdon of RN's (Salem Hosp. School of Nursing '46, '52 respectively), and my eventual goal will be to become a RN. Clean CORI, no issues at all to interfere with licensure.
Thanks very much -
Mike

Good luck Mike. Since you're asking a questions about a particular region, I'll move your post to the Mass. forum.
Good luck!

If you have a bachelor's degree in any field you can apply to Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester, MA. You will be in a 16 month accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, which places you in clinicals mostly at St.Vincent's in Worcester.I got my BSN there in May...don't have a job yet, but am hoping and praying to get in the field soon.
Good Luck,
Liz

If you're looking for work as a Patient Care Tech/ Patient Care Associate/ etc (glorified name for a nursing assistant with extra skill in taking EKG's, drawing blood, sometimes putting in Foley's, and other tasks which vary facility to facility), check at hospitals in your area- I'm betting you'd be an asset, considering the volume of patients in ED's currently.
I am a new grad and we have techs who perform the above tasks. The pay is icky, but it will be a job until you can complete school, and will keep you fresh (and get your foot in the door for RN employment) until that can occur.
Good luck!
