Anyone starting SP08 RN associate degree at BHCC?

Hello everyone!

After doing my pre-req for about a year and a half, I FINALLY got myself into a nursing program at BHCC! Wow, it was a loooong way. I am so excited to start my nursing education and wanted to know if there is anyone who is starting SP08 semester at BHCC...?

Also, I have a general question: I need to get a CPR certification before starting clinical. What kind of CPR certification do I need? And, where can I get it? How much would it cost...? I guess all these would be explained at the orientation, but since I will be leaving the country for big chunk during the winter break, I wanted to be proactive and start getting ahead with this... Please help!

Good luck to everyone and have a wonderful day!

Thanks,
Yoko

The Carney Hospital in Dorchester has a great CPR certification. It is a one time 4 hour class and the instructor is great. I think it is offered 4 times a month on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. I hadn't even registered but just walked in and they took me.

Thanks for your comment spudbunny!
Good luck with your application process, I know it could be such a pain in the neck
and nerve-wracking sometimes... But it's all worth it
PS, I am in the day program.

Thanks for your info spinninkim!
I have heard about the hospital from someone who is already in the program that it's a good
place to get a CPR certification. I think I will try to go there~! Thanks!

Re: Anyone starting SP07 RN associate degree at BHCC?

Hi there,

In all likelihood, you need to get the "Healthcare Provider" level of CPR certification before starting the program. I had to get this certification before starting my program down in North Carolina (I'm from Mass, though). Usually, schools will only want certification from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. If you haven't done so already, you should check with your program to see if they require AHA only or if you can do either. BHCC should be able to direct you to appropriate CPR courses in the area. If not, here's a link to the AHA's website:

http://www.americanheart.org/present...tifier=3012360

Once you enter your ZIP code, choose "BLS for Healthcare Providers" from the drop-down menu.

Here's the link to the Boston office of the Red Cross:

OH! ergito2,

It is so nice to hear from someone who actually graduated from the program!
Where did you do your clinical? Also, can you give me some advise for me in case
studying gets really tough and painful?

Thanks!

Yoko

Re: Anyone starting SP07 RN associate degree at BHCC?

Yoko:
I went to several different places for my clinical including: BWH, Youville, Spaulding rehab, a nursing home in east Boston, and a long term pediatric center in Billirica. I liked my experience in BWH, it's a great hospital to work at.
The first semester wasn't bad at all, but it took me some time to get used to the pace. The second semester seemed like the hardest one, almost one third of the class failed. The remaining two semesters went well and we didn't lose anyone. As long as you study hard, you will be fine. Let me know if you need any help in the future.

Re: Anyone starting SP07 RN associate degree at BHCC?

Hi Yoko! I can't believe the semester is almost over! Good luck in your program (I am in BHCC's Sp 08 evening option).

- Jillian (I sit three people to your left in A&P II)

Ergito2,

Congrats on completing the program! How did your job hunt go after graduation (how long, where are you now)?

Thanks!
