questions for U of MD grad or student

Particularly, if you're the civic minded type.

Did you find that U of MD has opportunities for service while in school i.e. locally in Baltimore inner city and also Internationally-any internship/relief work/ et cet while in school? What sorts of relationships do they have with relief organizations and do they encourage service?

I have searched the web site and googled every combination I can think of and only come up with the Govenors Wellmobile and vague mention of some innner city clinics. Where does one get more info?

How about the faculty? Is there a lot of service/social justice oriented work going on or is it mostly academic research? (Not that they are mutually exclusive) Unfortunately, I have found the admission office to be less than helpful answering questions when you are a prospective student. Does that change if you are accepted? I sure hope so.....any words on that?

Thanks to anyone who cares to shed some light.

I graduated from UMD this past May. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal and was hoping to have some international or domestic volunteer experience while in nursing school. Although I didn't have time because of working, studying, etc... there were opportunities at Maryland. The school of medicine is actually trying to recruit nursing students to apply for their Fogarty grant which funds students to do international research (mostly in Nigeria) as part of their course work. I have a friend who went this summer for 2 months. Let me know if you have any more specific questions!

I'm really glad to hear this. I had planned on going to UMD for my BSN/MS after my boards, but I saw that Hopkins has a really good international program. I almost changed my mind to go to Hopkins for this sole reason.
