Greater Baltimore Medical Center

Hey everyone!
I'm looking into GMBC in Towson, MD, for a position as an RN in the OR. Does anyone have experience with or know anything about this place?
Thanks so much!

Re: Greater Baltimore Medical Center

I work there. I can't say anything about the OR. other than there are 3 seperate ones ( GOR, Sherwood, and Women's Surgical). I have a friend who works in the Women's Surgical Center and she loves it.

As for the hospital..so far my experience has been great. I have worked there for a yeqar and 1/2 as both a student and now a RN.

What is it like working in their "Nursing Student" position? I was thinking if I don't get into CCBC's LPN program for this fall (I have good grades and high TEAS score but haven't had A&P yet (taking it this summer)) then I'll apply for ADN programs this fall, in which case I'd be interested in working at GBMC as a Nursing Student.

Re: Greater Baltimore Medical Center

Basically you work in the same capacity as a CNA.

Depending on the unit you are on you will either have a GREAT educator support person and the nurses will trust your judgement or you can have the opposite.

I worked on 3 different units as a student. 2 were awesome ( OB/GYN SURG and POSTPARTUM) and one was a disaster ( Med/Psych)

The bonus is that they do nursing student scholarships and you are a zero contract employee...so you work as much/little as you need to .... I BELIEVE the line was you had to work 16hrs/month...which is nothing... I worked a lot more.

MNy advice is what ever unit you are interested in try to get ON thta unit as a student and spend time there......your colleagues will respect you more and your CNA's will know you did your time:P

Also

In order to work as a "nursing student" you have to HAVE your CNA license.

In order to get that in MD....as a student you must be PAST "Fundamentals" . Basically past your 1rst semester.

Thanks for the info! I'm curious (if you have time to explain) what happened in the Med/Psych unit that made it a disaster for you? Was it the attitude of the staff there, or was the workload overwhelming?

Re: Greater Baltimore Medical Center

It wasn't the staff as most of the people I worked with were nice except the a few chouce techs. It just wasn't the right unit for me. The work was overwhelming at times and I found that it was stressing me out so bad I HAD to switch units. The unit now has a new manager whom I hear has made great changes.

It's a tough unit in the sense that it is Med/Surg COUPLED with the co-morbidity of psych. A lot of people with DT's, delerium, etc etc. It's not a locked unit, however, and they are there for medical treatment not psych treatment ( as in, say, Sheppard Pratt) I think I could handle it now much better but it was the 1rst unit I worked on and I was new to being a CNA and the hospital and I was a stressed out mess. I was supposed to have an educator and I never did. I was supposed to have a reference person and I never did. Once I switched to another unit I had smooth sailing with great educators and reference people.

Re: Greater Baltimore Medical Center

Sounds like a rough experience... you'd think, in a unit like that, they'd do more to get new staff settled in. Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it. I think if I don't get into the LPN program and go straight into the ADN program instead, I'll definitely consider GBMC after Fundamentals.

Re: Greater Baltimore Medical Center

I recently started in a "Nursing Student" capacity working in Sherwood Surgical Center, the outpatient/same day surgery unit. The nurses there are really awesome and I definitely am in love with the hospital itself. I've had nothing but great clinical experiences there and the clinical instructors that make it so great are also on staff there. Good luck!

Once again,
I did accept a position in the General OR at GBMC, and I start June 16th.
