Hello everyone!

I lived and worked in Maine (small rural hospital ~ 92 beds ~ in central Maine) for many years (1977-1994), then had to relocate because of my husband's job. At that point, I had only worked at that one place, and thought nursing was probably the same everywhere. Boy did I have a lot to learn. Turns out that job was my dream job, only I didn't realize it until I worked other places (Kansas City, Missouri a 350 bed hospital, and now Winston-Salem, NC at a 950 bed hospital).

Nice to meet you all.

Take care ~ Gayle

Hi Gayle!

What would it take to bring him back? That's too bad you can't find something similar where you are, have you looked? Hate to see anybody unhappy. There must be SOMEthing!

I wonder if a skilled unit of a nursing home would be somewhat like what you had here, God knows the acuity of the skilled units is about it was in hospitals a while back!

Take care, good of you to check in!

Hi Zoe!

Thanks for the welcome. I worked on a skilled nursing unit out in Kansas City, and the same here in NC. I am not unhappy really, just have had to get used to some different responsibilities. I think the biggest difference for me was that at my little hospital in Maine, we had a charge nurse who did all the dr calls, and she dealt with the difficult families. So, for my first many years, I had no experience with that. In my successive jobs, each nurse has to make her own dr calls etc. I am shy and quiet and not an assertive person, so those things have been hard for me, I don't enjoy that, but am getting better at it now.

Since moving, my husband has become a cold weather woos. He likes the warm weather here and I don't think we will get him back to Maine. His cousin lives there in Bar Harbor, and she visited here recently. He did concede that if he were to go back, that is where he would like to live.

Take care ~ Gayle

Gayle,

BOY do I hate calling docs! They can be such you know what's! We have a ton of interns too who are too proud for a measly nurse to suggest anything (yet they sometimes have no clue what to do, LOL!)

Y'know, every late summer I think I'm gonna move to a warmer climate, I could not tolerate ONE MORE WINTER, yet each winter here I am, ha ha! I was close this year to moving to CA to the point of making applications but, sigh, here I am again!

Maybe you just need a quick visit, if you can (and then refuse to go back, hee hee hee!)

Take care Gayle!

Hello fellow Mainahs! Just wanted to say hi! Boy it is starting to get cold, I had to wait 10 min for my car to defrost the other morning! The leaves are pretty though aren't they?

Hope all is well with you all and that you are doing more than getting by!

Good morning Zoe and everyone!!

Starting to get cooler down here too. It feels good compared to the really hot days. Some things I miss about Maine, but I don't miss the cold and having to shovel all that snow. Though I must say, down here we get more ice ~ I would so much rather deal with snow than ice when it comes to driving.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Gayle

Gayle,

I wrote this little story for a friend who really misses snow! She is in Florida now and just dying to be here ... I edited a bit!

************

Meanwhile, out on the lake, Gayle lazily dangled her fishing pole over the side of the boat. Dragonflies buzzed around her head like mini motorboats; she flinched when one came near but otherwise she marveled at the way they skimmed the surface of the water. The sun was hot on her face.

Suddenly a dark cloud floated overhead and the sky grew dim. The air grew noticeably cooler. "Oh dang," she muttered. "I can never catch a break."

Then she felt something tickle the tip of her nose. She jumped a bit, then noticed something cool landing on her cheek. She looked up.

A thousand fluffy snowflakes began to fall as she watched. They floated down singly, then in pairs, then in crowds. She put her hands out to catch them, to look at them and their crystallized patterns as they melted on her palm. Her eyes began to water, her mouth curling up in the crookedest happy grin.

Soon there was enough snow accumulated on the bottom of the boat that she could make a snowball. As she packed the snow into a cold, dense pile she wondered at the redness of her hands and the delightful numbness of her fingers.

Then she looked up, across the lake, and her beautiful delighted eyes searched, then found. Suddenly, all the members of the Allnurses board saw her on their screens, sitting there in the boat, smiling and laughing like a child, and looking at every person as they sat immobilized at their desks. They peered at the screen and the image was real, and suddenly ...

SPLAT! The snowball struck each one in the forehead!

*********

Have a wonderful weekend Gayle!
