Could use some help!

Hello there,
I hope this isn't a stupid question... but I am very interested in taking a cna course to start my nursing career but need help! I have been a stay at home Mom for five years and I'm afraid I don't quite know how to jump into the "carreer field" again. I am reloacting to Portland, Maine so if someone in the area could help me in explaining how to go about starting this I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks

Re: Could use some help!

Just go to the Maine Medical Center website; mmc.org and also look for the Portland Adult Ed. website. MMC has a free day course if you pass the very basic test at the info session and get selected by interview, Adult Ed cost about $1000, but it's at night. I start in March at mmc and I'm sooooo excited! I just sold my house, changed careers after 20 years (Engineer to gonnabe a nurse), and moved to Maine!!! Good Luck!

Re: Could use some help!

I saw that there was a free course at MMC but since I already missed the infor session, I didn't know if there was another one, or if I could still try and join the March course? I'm nervous about entering getting my foot in the door and don't really know what to do. Where do I find to take that test to pass before the course? I can't really afford the $1000 dollar night classes at Adult Ed, so I'm hoping I can do the MMC thing. Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it. Your very brave switching fields, I wish I had that kind of confidence! Thanks again.

Re: Could use some help!

I am in the MMC class right now and love it.

The next info session is Jan 28th for the March class. The TABE test you need to take is offered at 5, before the info session. Good luck!

You'll be fine just showing up. I'd show up around 4:30.

Re: Could use some help!

I'm hoping to get into the March program at MMC, too! I went to the info session in November, but haven't had my interview yet. They want you to have all your paperwork together and both of your references into their office before they schedule your interview. I made the mistake of asking two really busy people to provide references for me and they both took forever to sent their letters in!

The TABE was basic reading comprehension, so no real problem there.

I will be so happy to have my foot in the door at MMC. Clinicals start for me in September. A CNA job there will be job that I think I can fit in with school and hopefuly will help me get a job there after graduation.

Good luck!

Re: Could use some help!

I'm not sure the January info session is for March entry...since they already had one in November. You might want to call. Also, it should work to just show up, but they have a number they ask you to call and leave your name to let them know you're coming it case it gets full. Look under Education, then CNA training on the mmc.org website. You can also call the secretary of CNA training to make sure this info session isn't for next September. Again, good luck!
