As bad as it seems?

I am on the fence as to whether or not to pursue a career in nursing. I have been accepted into a program starting in May but the more I read on this web site and others the more I am shying away from it. Basically what I am getting is that doctors are rude, older nurses are not nice, family members are a nuisance, no one gets to go to the bathroom or eat, your first year is spent in tears....the list goes on.
Can anyone shed some light on what nursing is like in the Greater Portland area hospitals? Is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Re: Does Nursing Suck?

Maybe at non-teaching hospitals.

I have yet to have a bad experience with a nurse, doctor, or CNA at MMC and have only had one bad experience with a patient.

Everyone there works well together and wants everyone to succeed. If you don't have a thick skin though, I wouldn't do it. And you should tell USM if you don't want to do the accelerated program ASAP as there are 20-30 people on a waiting list waiting for people to drop out.

Re: Does Nursing Suck?

Nursing can be a very rewarding profession to be in but it does have it's moments and this site allows people to post the good and bad especially if they feel they need to vent their feelings to people who understand. This is a thread very recently asking a similar question http://allnurses.com/forums/f87/really-bad-273901.html

Re: As bad as it seems?

Well, it's been a few years (20) since I worked at Maine Med (NICC), but it was without a doubt the highlight of my nursing career. I absolutely loved it. I was raised in TX (parents from Maine.....so lots of relatives there), and currently live in KY (nursing professor), so I have a few experiences to compare it to.
