I am assuming with the work/course load of the Accelerated ADN program it is not possible to work but I was wondering if it is possible to work while attending the "traditional" ADN program? What is a typical week like? I am asking because I am married and the mother of a one year old and would like to be able to work at least 15 hours or so a week. If it is not possible to work while attending the "traditional" program, it would make more sense for me to set my sights on the Accel. program as to only be out of work for about a year. Any suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I do not know about a traditional program, but it would be impossible to work in the OLOL accel. program. However a wonderful benefit with a nursing degree is that most hospitals will pay back your school loans and there is a government program that will pay you somewhere around $40,000.00 to work in a depressed area for 3 years and honey, NO fits that bill.

So far as we know WIA is paying $6,000.00 of our school expenses and Tulane is picking up the other $5,000.00. Then Tulane pays us a stipend of $600.00 a month to go to school; they consider us employees. Of course you have to agree to work for one of the 200 hospitals around the nation under the parent company of Tulane or pay back the money after graduation. The pay after taxes however (not having received a pay check yet) is reportedly around $325.00, that is what a 15 hr part time job would pay. WIA is supposed (repeat that word) to pay us an additional $10.43 per day that we are at school.

Also be aware that OLOL is starting this same program at West Jefferson Hospital in NO. What separates the students in these accel. programs is that you have to have a 4 yr degree and all the pre-reqs that are required before being accepted.

Dsoginer, thanks so much for the great info! The only prereqs I am missing are A&P I and II and Microbiology. I think when I apply in the spring I will apply to OLOL (traditional program since my prereqs won't be completely finished) and BRCC to increase my chances.

Do you know if OLOL in BR (that's where I would attend) offers anything comparable to the deal in NO with Tulane as far as tuition reimbursement?

Our nursing instructor in NO told us that the BR accelerated program does not offer the stipend this year but then again you also have no signed contract with any hospital. That means you are free to work where you want.

Thank you all for the information. I am a huge fan of this site because of the great information that is available. I am applying for the fall 2008 OLOL-Accelerated program and am trying to get as much information as possible.

Which location are you applying for? Tulane, Baton Rouge, West Jeff or East Jeff?

If you search for Olol College there is so much information and if this does not answer your questions; post them on here and someone will answer
