Hello everyone,
I need some help..ok, I've decided to go into the nursing career field mainly cause it's something that I've wanted to do for awhile. Currently I'm in the AF and am just getting tired of deployments, also my husband is active duty too. Well, I've been looking at a couple of different colleges/universities in the local area. Louisiana Technical College says they have an 18-24 month program. I was also looking at Southern University @ Shreveport, but haven't really heard any information on them. And then there is Northwestern State University. Ok, so basically I'm looking for something that when my enlistment is up in Nov 08 it won't be hard to get into. I know i have to take my ACT test but I've also taken classes on base and online would these transfer for my prereqs..Algebra I, Speech, English I, and a couple other. Which is the best place? Also, do I have to have all the pre reqs out of the way to be able to get into one of these colleges/universities?

I am assuming you have been in the military for a while and are going to be entitled to GI benefits. The advice I can give you is based on how long your husband is going to continue to serve and where. Most colleges and universities allow a certain number of credit hours to be transferred. If you go for an Associate Degree, you will need sixty-two credit hours for your degree, included in these your nursing courses. BSN programs generally require a minimum of one hundred and twenty-six credit hours, including nursing courses. Unless the associate program is like the one I attended, where you had co-requisites, you will have to meet their pre-requisites first then apply to the nursing program.

I suggest you talk with the people in the office that advises on post enlistment programs and what you are entitled to. They know what you are entitled to and what you can obtain while still on active duty. There is a military program that allows you to earn college credits while on active duty, regardless of where you are stationed. Your husband will need to have a duty assignment that will last three or four years. You will then have a chance to complete program.

If you could move down to the Baton Rouge area, then the diploma program at the Baton Rouge General Hospital could be a possible option. I think its a 2 year RN program. Then, you could work as an RN. You might want to check on them and see what they require for prereqs.

I know most Universities require College Algebra, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Psych, Chemistry, and a few others. You'd have to check with each school since there are minor differences which could mean more semester of prereqs.

There is the option of enrolling and taking online pre-reqs until you are ready to apply for clinicals. You can work at your own pace (since you are Active Duty). Granted there are probably some courses you may need to take on campus since they are not offered online. Some colleges of nursing may or may not accept transfer credits (CCAF, other university credits, etc). Make sure you check into that to avoid retaking classes.

I am in the ASN clinical (2nd level) program at NSU so I can attest to the fact that acceptance to clinicals for this program is competitive in that there are many students applying for limited clinical spots. If you keep a high GPA (above 3.5) you have a great chance at being accepted with your first application after you have taken all the prerequisites. It is my understanding the 4-year program (BSN) is a little less competitive (due to a more balanced student/clinical spot ratio). There are other factors involved in qualifying for clinical there. Contact student services (318.677.3000) and ask for the curriculum and any other info you may want to be mailed to you. This will give you an idea of what you will need for the program.

NSU has a great nursing (2-year and 4-year) program with wonderful instructors. It is a smaller campus so it is easier to get to know your instructors/have more interaction with them, the students usually stay together through the program (good way to find study partners), and I don't think there is a wait-list. be sure and check what schools will accept each others credits
i know that northwestern will not accept credits earned at lsu-a
my dtr went to northwestern and i know they have a good program there in shreveport
bossier does have some classes that can be transfered to northwestern but i am not sure which can or can't
