post open heart care info

Does anyone know where I can find more information on taking care of open heart pts? I work in CVSU, where we receive CABG and valve replacement pts after they are stable post op. I would like to move up to CVRU eventually, and would like to read more about the care involved.

Thanks.

The book "Manual of Perioperative Care in Cardiac Surgery" by Robert Bojar is an excellent reference for taking care of open hearts. It covers just about everything you would run across. You can use it strictly as a reference or read it from cover to cover. You can pick the book up on Amazon or other book sites. Highly recommended.

Have you come across any online references?

Re: post open heart care info

Hey whatnext,
I know this may sound like a wierd concept but if you work on cv stepdown you have exposure to the surgeons. Most of these guys have been doing cv surgery for a LONG time, and they are really good at teaching, if you ask an intelligent question and listen to their answer (gentle probing, not a barrage of questions). They can teach you more in 2 minutes then you can read and comprehend in two hours.
Sounds like your at Carolina's medical center. I worked at Presby years ago and found Chuck Edwards group to be very approachable and very willing to teach if you had the inclination.
