Question New Grad in Telemetry.....advice please

Hello

I will be graduating in December and I already have a job. I chose to start in March so I can prepare for the boards. The floor I am working on has mostly tele beds but have 12 beds set aside for vent patients. Although I am sure this will be challenging and exciting at the same time, I am a little nervous. Any advice on what should be prepare for as a new grad? Any handbooks/materials that I could get that will be helpful? By the way, at the end of my orientation, I do have to take a test (Tele/Critical care).

Congrats and good luck!

As far as tele is concerned...remeber to treat the patient, not the monitor. (you'll hear this alot...and it's good advice) Many times a patient will develope a weird rhythm that scares the heck out of staff...but the patient will feel 'just fine'...Take deep breaths and slow down when this happens...it'll benefit all involved!

Wow! Cograts on the new job!

How did you get a job in critical care so quick? I'd like to do the same but I was under the impression that you had to climb your way to such a unit.

Thanks to both of you for your blessings and advice!

I did originally ask for Med Surg floor, But suprisingly, there were none! At my hospital, they do take new grads. I believe the orientation is a little more extensive though. Also, I think pretty soon everything will be monitored. So I might as well learn now right.
