Question CCU RN wants to learn open hearts

Hello!

I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts, and I would like to ask you for some valued advice.

I currently work in an ICU/CCU, and aspire to go into management one day (everyone groans when I say that). There is an opening in my facility for the CVICU, and I really think that learning open hearts would be a valuable asset for me to have. I have worked for 1 year in the ICU, in a MICU and now this CCU. I came to this CCU because I wanted to learn more cardiac, but it seems like most of our pts are MICU pts, and we usually only have about 3 out of 12 pts on the CCU service. Anyway, my hospital allows us to move after 6 mo in a position. Should I go for it now or wait until a year is up? I don't want to look like a job hopper, but I don't want to miss the opening, either.

Thanks!

Re: CCU RN wants to learn open hearts

I say go for it! I'm bias though because I love open hearts and could never work in a MICU or CCU If you applied for and accepted this job how long could they hold you in CCU before you transferred? At my hospital it is up to 30 days. It might be awhile before you get to the new unit, might as apply now when there is an opening.

Re: CCU RN wants to learn open hearts

I am in a new grad in the CSICU @ a large facility, and I love it. Great experience, great people, and real acute. Some days are slow and some days are non stop you never know what will happen. I say go for it
