I have a question. I am a new nurse to the ICU. I had been an LPN for over 8 years and worked in many fields befoere I transferred to the ICU after I finally "bridged over" with my ADN. I still need to take my ACLS, but I am very nervous. I have already went through Trauma Nursing Core Course and that was easier than I thought.
I was jsut hoping someone could give me some insight on what I should concentrate on, like making sure what I am comfortable with.

Dont sweat it. By the time you take it you'll already be doing lots of that stuff...and Any of the widely available self-study books and stuff like that will get you ready. Eventually you'll be going to the re-certification classes withought a thought of 'studying up'

Hey Christy!!!

I agree with Dinith. ACLS was once taught and tested like military boot camp. Today they're much more oriented to seeing you learn and pass. The horror stories from years ago no longer apply. You can relax as you prepare.

Agree with the above. And, now the new criteria for BLS have been incorporated in the ACLS protocols as well as a few additional changes in ACLS. So, if one is seeking re-certification in ACLS, be prepared for some new things. And, if you are currently BLS certified under the old BLS criteria, you might brush up on the new BLS standards before you take the ACLS course. Just will make a smoother transition.........

Thank you so much! I feel a little better now. I actually have BLS renewal next week, but my boss hasn't said anything about ACLS yet. I was supposed to go for ACLS on 5/31 btu i was admitted for a chloecystectomy instead! What a way to spend my bday

If you passed TNCC, don't worry too much about ACLS. The NEW ACLS is even easier, than the old. ACLS is esp. easier for someone who is working in ICU and understands a lot of the terminology better, than a med-surg nurse.
