Hey! I was reading one of the discussions below and wanted to ask a question. I am a new grad just starting in CCU. I am scheduled for ACLS in 1 month. What can I expect? Is there a way to better prepare myself so I am not totally lost? It's very intimidating knowing that I will be in there with nurses who have been in practice for a number of years. Thanks.

Hello, nursedaisy,:Melody:

It would be great if you could take a dysrrhythmia course/class beforehand, but, it really is not necessary. Just helps in rhythm identification.

You can expect to be nervous. Most everyone are very, very nervous. First timers and ones who have taken it many times. It comes natural.

I teach ACLS and I do understand this fear/anxiety about the course.

I do hope you get your book well in advance to study.

Guess what? I would bet you do as good if not better than some of the ones who have taken ACLS before.

Relax and just study. You will do fine. Good luck.

In my area, ACLS instruction has changed dramatically from what is was in years past. I've only had it for 3 years, so I didn't have to go through the old classes that were, by all accounts, pretty scary. The program is supposed to be much more "user friendly." My advice to you is to KNOW YOUR RHYTHMS. Study your book, especially the small pocket cards with the individual algorithms. Study the steps, and the meds. Pay attention to standard amounts of meds, and any limits on them. Good luck!!

Thank you both for replying. My nurse educator has already given me the book for the class and has me registered to take critical care classes before the ACLS. I must say that my hospital seems to really be looking out for me. I hear some horror stories with new grads and their first job but I am really impressed with the staff on my unit. They have all taken me under their wing and made me feel right at home. Thanks for the advice. I will study my rhythms before class since this is probably a weak area for me.
