Provisional License

I need help you guys... I'm a new lpn grad. I received my provisional license but after receiving it decided to take a class towards my rn so never took advantage of using it. Now that class is about to be over im wanting to complete my 120 hours but my provisional license expires on 05/08/2008. My question is can i just pay the 120.00 again to get a new one for another 6 months? Please help!!!

Re: Provisional License

The Kentucky BON website, including all their rules about licensure, is accessible through this site -- click on the grey "Resources" tab in the upper right corner, then click on "Boards of Nursing" on the drop-down menu, and that will take you to a listing of all the US BONs.

The Kentucky BON rules for LPNs state:

"(4) Upon request, an applicant who meets the requirements of subsection (1) of this
section shall be issued a provisional license that shall expire no later than six (6)
months from the date of issuance. This period of time may be extended at the
discretion of the board upon the provisional licensee showing that he or she has a
temporary physical or mental inability to complete the clinical internship within six
(6) months. The provisional licensee shall provide evidence as requested by the
board to substantiate this inability.
(5) The clinical internship shall last a minimum of one hundred twenty (120) hours and
shall be completed within six (6) months of the issuance of the provisional license,
unless an extension has been granted by the board pursuant to subsection (4) of this
section. The board shall promulgate an administrative regulation in accordance with
KRS Chapter 13A to establish procedures applicable to the documentation of
completion of the internship. The internship may be completed during a clinical
orientation period in a practice setting."

Sounds like, unless you can convince them that you had a "temporary physical or mental inability to complete the clinical internship," your chances aren't too good.

I must admit I'm curious about why you would choose to take a class toward becoming an RN after graduating instead of first completing the process of getting your LPN license?

120 hours is just 10 12-hour shifts; is it possible for you to get a job now and complete the internship between now and when your permit expires?

Re: Provisional License

Unfortunately, as the previous poster stated, you have to complete the internship for the provisional license by the 6 mos expiration date.

My best friend and I graduated in Dec 07 from the practical nursing program. We have until July to complete our internship and the NCLEX or we will be out of luck.

We, too, went straight back into a fulltime college schedule to complete our last two RN program prereqs in order to try and get into the BCTCS RN program this summer.

We are having a TERRIBLE time finding internship positions, and really starting the stress about being able to finish in time before our provisional license expires.

If you find out anything different with the KY BON, let us know here on this thread.

The whole LPNA provisional license/internship/6 mos situation stinks!
Good luck to you!

We are about to offer to work the 120 hours for free to anyone who will let us just to get this over with!
