student nurse externships?

I'm just beginning an accelerated bsn, and am interested in working as a student nurse while in school. Can anyone offer any opinions or words of advice on the subject? Particularly, can anyone tell me about their experiences at any of the hospitals in Indianapolis? What is the work load like, what should I look for in a program, and how can I make myself more marketable if applying for such a position? I'm very new to this and welcome any comments...
