Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

Thanks to everyone for your posts! Is there anyone in Indy that could answer the pay question? How about any NPs out there?

inmale, I think you may just have to call some of the area hospitals and ask, most hospitals have a base rate for new grad hires and there is little negotiation in that rate. Some hospitals will factor in past exp if you did any CNA or LPN work into that equation, but not all.

When deciding on the facility to work for there are alot of factors involved: tuition forgiveness, PTO, health coverage, location, staff to patient ratio etc etc etc. Alot of the hospitals will list their perks/benefits on their HR website. You will probably find that most of the hospitals in Indy are with in a few bucks or so with each other, but weigh all the benefits, as sometimes even the hospital that is a dollar less an hour will have better benefits so in the long run you will be doing better by working for them.

If your currently in clinicals ask the floor nurses what the base starting rate is, most will tell you. I know many hospitals recruit Srs in their last semester of nursing school, you will for sure be given starting wages then. But if you cant wait till then just call into HR and ask.

Best of luck!!

Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

I accepted an offer from Clarian in Carmel, with almost 2 yrs exp they offered me $22.45/hr base with $3.40 evening diff, $4.00 night diff and $5 weekend diff. Its only slightly less than i make in Pa, but more with the differentials. I have to pay into my benefits there where as I currently get them for free, but over all everything else is cheaper so it will work.

Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

Situation: Live in Indiana, work in Illinois

Straight out of school, found a job in an ICU in illinois...wanted to work in a teaching institution and to be honest w/ you, there isn't one by me at all. The quality of nursing here, while it's definitely like the greatest, but definitely one of the best out there, I have failed to find one to compare in NW Indiana. One of the things I look into is pt care and being up to date w/ the current practices, and have yet to find that...and then the nursing culture, doctor - RN relations, as well as administration are other factors that fall into it as well...Physicians just have too much pub, and nurses aren't valued as well...and that's what I've seen so far in the facilities around me

Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

No, I don't. I am an RN with almost 6 yrs. experience and am currently making $23.50/hr for day shift medical/surgical hospital floor work. I started there making $19/hr out of school. I have always recieved good reviews and raises, but I do not think I am recieving the pay I deserve.

For as much as we have to know and be responsible for. No, we are not paid fairly.

Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

I work in a small northern Indiana hospital and have been in OB for 11 years here. I make $23.00/hr, plus 10% shift diff for nights, and time and a half for weekends.
Just thought I'd add to the info!

I don't feel nurses in NWI are fairly compensated at all considering the close proximity to Chicago and the comparatively high cost of living in what is basically SE Chicago suburbs.

"Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?"

Considering our low cost of living, I think so. I don't know what wages the local hospitals start the new grads at. I'm job searching right now in Indy. I have 13 years experience. Wishard Hospital gave me the best hourly wage offer, sign on bonus, and seems to have a terrific insurance package. The work load does seem to be very demanding.

You need to call the nurse recruiters and flat out ask them. Really, it is o.k.

Re: Do RN's in Indiana think they are adequately compensated?

I work in Indy but as a traveller so I don't really know what a staff nurse makes there.
I did work as a staff nurse in Cincinnati about 6 months ago in a small hospital just off the Univ. of Cincinnati campus and made $26/hr. It was a med-surg/ortho floor and you floated to tele. It was an ok job but the attitude of the hospital ( from upper management on down was horrible ).
I have found, after 22 years of being a nurse, that if I can somehow have fun during my shift I do better. Now, I'm not saying that is the only reason to go into nursing or that it's the main reason I went ( because I have bills to pay and mouths to feed, too ), but if YOU are happy with what you're doing - it doesn't matter how much you get paid.
I live on a small farm in s.e IN and love it but the " pay " ain't good ( ha ha ha ).
It all boils down IMHO to what YOU really want to get out of nursing ( or any career, for that matter ) .... do you want a big pay check? satisfaction in a job well done? acknowledgement from peers or higher ups? or are you just wanting to take care of sick folks, kids, moms, whatever and KNOW you did the best you could and then go home and watch the grass grow?
Personally, I like the last option with the grass growing.
Just my 2 cents worth,
