Moraine bound...please help!!!

Wow, I have been on this website for months and never knew there was a region section where I can actually talk to people from my area duh? Anyhow, I am so glad I found this. So I need help!!! I am currently a stay at home mom of 2 kids ages 4 and 8. I am 33 years old and I AM returning to school. I live in the south suburbs. I can't decide between Social work or nursing. I will be going to Moraine Valley for nursing, but have to take all the pre-reqs. So first, can someone tell me is it even worth a mom of 2 kids doing this? I heard moraine is so hard. I like nursing because of thejob description, money, schedule, stability, patienct contact. etc., but i am horrible at math and science. I love the mental health field and would like to work with adolecents in crises (eating disorders, substance abuse, depression). Now, I also am leaning towards social work. But i would have to go to Governors state university, which is farther for me, more expensive and to make any money i need to get my masters degree, which will take me forever parttime. I am planning on registering at moraine for the cna class in oct of 2008 (this fall). But i need to make sure i can do this. Or if i am better off with social work. My heart leads me to both! I know with nursing i can get my cna and start working immediately (i had job offers from palos hospital in adolscent psych unit and timberline knolls, but with certificatin they couldn't hire me).

Re: Moraine bound...please help!!!

Hiya yuyu,

I just transferred out of Moraine due to the fact that the amount of people and available seats in the RN program there is an absolute joke. Last semester I was told directly by admissions that there were 875 applicants for 50 seats. I also heard that supposedly by next year they are going to accept 100 a semester. I am currently going for my BSN due to waiting so long to get into Moraine(I do not have a 4.0 gpa) My advice to you is this. If you think that nursing may be the way you want to go then get your CNA and work in a hospital while you work on pre req's. I have worked in a hospital for 6 years. I am not a nurse, but getting the experience and seeing that the job is rewarding is what keeps me going. There are also times when I regret not going to law school. LOL!! You have to follow your own heart. I am in my first semester now, and although it really is not that bad yet, I am expecting a real rude awakening next semester. I also am very lucky to have a great support system. It comes in handy if you have someone cooking for you! The busy work is what kills me. If you want to know anything else please do not hesitate to ask!
