You will not get six months free housing from any hospital here. Queens gives a $5000 relocation bonus along with 30 days free housing. That's about all you're going to get.
Not only is housing expensive but becoming very hard to obtain---condos that were formerly rentals have been sold in record numbers during the last few years due to the huge increases in real estate prices. The rental market is very tight.
Bear in mind that the cheap (relatively speaking) places can be awful dumps, complete with drug activity and prostitution.
You are better off looking for decent housing a bit away from Waikiki, more towards Queens. You can check out the areas once you are here. It's really hard to evaluate a place over the internet. We have lots of dumps here that are right next to gorgeous condo complexes so even the neighborhood might not give you clues as to whether the place is decent or not.
Queens puts out its own little newsletter that often lists places for rent.
A decent studio will probably run you about a $1000/month and up. You can search for rentals here:
