Wink Safe places to live....

Another nurse here.....looking for a travel assignment on Oahu.

I have talked about assignements with a few companies, some on the mainland, 1 in Honolulu.

It seems many of the hospitals to work at are in the western part of Honolulu or west OF Honolulu. I don't know which hospital yet or where they would put me up there. I know I could take a housing stipend and that many apartments rent as furnished units there.

Can anyone help out with where NOT to live and WHY?

Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks!

OKIE

Re: Safe places to live....

Hi there! I don't live on Oahu now, but I did for several years, and was just back for vacation a week ago. Waikiki can be a very fun place to live, there are tons of furnished apartments available, and the bus service has a lot of routes. I have heard that parking can sometimes be a hassle at some hospitals, but I don't know from personal experience.

Traffic can be a nightmare, especially for someone who doesn't know the island well, but it's doable. If you want to live outside of Honolulu, Kaneohe is a great little town, and it is a fairly quick commute to town if you have a vehicle.

Good luck! My husband and I are planning on moving back to the island next year.

Re: Safe places to live....

Hello, I nursed in hawaii for a couple years from 2003-2005. I lived in waikiki which was great since you can walk everywhere-that is a great place to live if you will be working at Queens or Straub or Kapiolani women and children's. If you wil be working in Pali Momi(located in Aiea near Pearl Harbour) or St. Francis(Ewa Beach) you could live out there but then i would recommend buying a cheap car to drive while there. I know a lot of travelers who bought a really cheap car to drive that was just fine for the time they were there, then you can really get to explore the island. Hope this helps
