South Georgia Medical Center

Anyone on here work there? I'm starting orientation the end of this month and was wanting to get any opinions/tips from folks who might already be working there...

I've only worked in a small hospital before, where everyone pretty much knew everyone. So, it's going to be a bit of a change....

Thanks for the welcome, but I'm not new to town... I grew up here, just haven't worked at SGMC or any larger hospital before :-)

Merei,
I work at SGMC and have been there for almost 3 years. What floor will you be working on and when do you start orientation? Also what information do you want to know about? Will be glad to help!

Re: South Georgia Medical Center

Hi

I'll be on 3West. General Orientation starts on the 30th.

I've been wondering about all kinds of things... scrub colors, how people act, worry about the doctors.... , when payday will be. Oh yeah, and another one: how long will it take me before I can find my way around? LOL......

Re: South Georgia Medical Center

First of all welcome!!! I work on the 4th floor, 4 medical. I get pulled when needed to 3 west (surgical floor). Scrubs are ceil blue/white any combination. Paydays are every 2weeks, this past Friday was pay day April 20,.
SGMC really isn't that big and it takes no time to find your way around. Hard to get lost , our supplies come in a pyxis now and you have to pull everything. But is really easy when you get the hang of it.
What shift will you be working and what days? I work 7on/7off and this startes my week off, I work 11-7.
Have you met Michelle Marshall, Rn, Nurse Manager for 3 west yet? She is wonderful to work for, very fair and to the point. I used to work with her when she was charge nurse on 4west, ortho/neuro.
As far as doctors, surgeons are surgeons, I usually don't have to deal with too often.
Hope this helps and puts you a little at ease.

Re: South Georgia Medical Center

Thanks for the welcome.. It is alot of help, especially with the scrub colors.
And it's great to talk to folks that already work where I'll be working...

I'll be working 3-11 7 on/7 off. Not sure which week I'll be on yet.
Michelle is the one who interviewed me, she was great. I've actually emailed her a couple of questions about stuff and she's been great about responding even though I'm not working yet. :-)

I've been trying to find scrubs that are comfy and yet for a good price too, so hopefully I'll be able to find some. Ceil blue's not a bad color.

The pyxis will be different for me, we were waiting on it at the last hosp I worked at, it ended up coming in 2 days before my last day...

thanks so much
meredith

Re: South Georgia Medical Center

Glad to hear thst all is working out well for you. As far as scrubs, try good ole' walmart, or city trends next to Harvey's at Parkplace off Bemiss. Oh yeah! try Dollar General Stores, I saw ceil blue there for 6.00 a piece, hard to beat 12.00 for a set of scrubs.
If you need anything else or want to know more PM me.

Re: South Georgia Medical Center

Hi nurses of SGMC, I am so tickled to find this tread. Just registered to allnurses yeaterday, and am having a ball here. Finding this thread is the most fun yet. I worked flex care for 2 yrs then we moved to CO. We've been here 2yrs. My brother is still an RN there @ SGMC. I miss GA and SGMC terribly @ times. 5west was my main floor. Is *** still manager? He was terrific to work for as were most of the managers I met. I had went there from LTC, and soon had it down. Like my brother told me though, sometimes you'll wish you had worn your roller skates. I'm sure you'll love it. Good luck!

Nope *** is now the Med/Surg Director, he took over from *** who now is over OR.
By the way who is your brother? We don't have a lot of male nurses on the floors, they seem to work in the units.
SGMC is growing so much, adding on a new ED and op surgical area.
If you go to SGMC.org you can see all the updates.

Lorie
