We do have differing opinions regarding the faculty. There are quite a few students this semester feeling the same way. The general buzz is there is only about 3 teachers that actually give a darn. I can say that people seem to be happier with the clinical and pla's this semester than last. However, there have been a lot of disgruntled students for several different reasons. Looking back through other old postings it doesn't seem like much has changed at GPC. I have decided I will not go back to GPC. I've put in for a transfer and should have no doubt to be picked up. GPC ruined my moral but thank goodness I was able to keep up my gpa unlike some others.

Hi, I've been accepted to GPC's nursing program and will start in the Fall. I have a couple of questions, and also a few answers to some of the previous posts. First, to answer a few questions regarding grades of people who have gotten into GPC: my GPA (cumulative) is 3.65 and my NET scores were 93 Math, 70 Reading (83 overall score/85th percentile). My science GPA is 4.0.

Second, I have taken all general education classes EXCEPT 1913 (Micro). I am unable to take it this summer, and I start my nursing courses in the Fall. I know GPC doesn't require all general education classes to be completed prior to starting the program, however I am aware that I have until my 3rd semester to take it. For those of you who have completed your 1st year of nursing at GPC, should I take it Micro in the Fall (along with NURS 1921) or should I take it in the Spring (with 2nd semester of nursing courses)?

Also, how often does GPC offer nursing courses in the summer, particularly the 3rd nursing semester courses?

Finally, are you really as busy during the nursing curriculum as everyone says?

First and foremost, congratulations on being accepted into the program. I am currently a GPC nursing student and I would definitely suggest trying to get Micro knocked out next summer. Try checking with the school advisor and see if they can tell you if it will be offered next summer.

Yes, the curriculum is busy....very busy during the first semester. GPC does a teaching called "front loading" so you get a whole, whole lot of information right at the beginning. I honestly would not suggest you take Micro this fall.

One other suggestion would be to talk with one or some of the instructors in the nursing department and see what they suggest.

Although it is busy and hard, I know many who have come through it and are happy they can now call themselves RNs. Good luck to you, PM me if you have any other questions, and God bless.

Sorry, I forgot to answer the summer question. I know that this year (2008), they are not going to be offering the 3rd semester in the summer, but I do not know about 2009 and beyond. You may also check with them about this due to there being many factors in deciding whether or not to offer it. Also, it is quite limited to how many people are allowed to take the 3rd semester in the summer.

Prior to starting the actual nursing program, I had a 4.0. The math part of the net test I just barely passed. I have yet to get an A in the nursing classes and at this point, I am just thankful to have squeeked out two B's! I would suggest that you take micro over the summer. The course is very demanding and most of the students tried to arrange it so their cores were done or we are finishing them prior to our second year. I myself would not recommend GPC if you were able to get into another school. Oh yes, I know that will spark an email stating that is just one students opinion but before I started GPC I came to this website and there was pages and pages of unsatisfied students. I thought it would be best to find out for myself and how bad could it be. I now agree with those previously listed emails. I have seen some improvement but not enough to make me tell another student this is a good school to attend. I thought I could brace myself by knowing what the emails said. So, just be prepared. Oh, hopefully in orientation they won't forget to tell you about other expenses that they didn't tell us about. We were never told that each hospital you do clinicals in requires a drug screen and background test that cost 80 bucks. We also weren't told of the ERI being pass or fail. Just get ready for hell and you'll be prepared.

I won't repeat what I have stated before, but I would like to clarify that not all of the clinical locations require the background check and the drug screening. Some require both, some require one or the other and some don't require any at all. The background check usually should only cost from $10-$20 and you have to look around for the drug screening. Some of the hospitals require you to use their own chosen company and others will allow you to go anywhere. Just be sure to get the information from the instructors and if you don't understand something, always speak up and ask.

I will be going into my third semester this Fall, and as of yet, I haven't had a lot of out of pocket expenses that weren't mentioned. I havent had topay $80.00 for a drug screen, as a matter of fact, I haven't had to pay for a drug screen at any price. Neither have I had to have a background check done. It depends on the clinical facility you're at, not GPC. Any additional books that I purchased were strictly on my own, not anything mandatory that GPC required.

Also, during orientation, you'll receive a course syllabus. In the course syllabus there's a section call " course Requirements/Grading". It expalins everything that has to be passed with either a letter grade (course exams), a satisfactory/unsatisfactory (clinicals, lab evaluations), or the testing that you're given more than one opportunity to pass (ERI, Math). If there's something that you don't understand, or simply need a little clarification on, please speak up. Go to your instructor......oh, you'll be given an academic advisor and it's madatory for you to meet with them. You'll also be course advisor that you have to meet with if you score below a 75 on any exam or if you just want to review your test.

I wish you the very best. First semester is very busy, fast. It can be overwhelming for some........most but nevertheless, it can still be enjoyable. You just can't walk in thinking that it's going to be a piece of cake and you definitley can't compare nursing courses to prerequisits.
