Re: NE1 have any info on broward community college nursing program?

Hey how are you? i guess i was confused, i thought that the broward health scholarships included all the memorials and the Joe Dimaggio? Those were the hospitals i wanted to apply for.
Anyways, i know its a tough decision but, i have a friend who went to MDC and entered their Baptist scholarship, and she told me it was awesome. She loved working for them, she didnt get to do anything that she wanted to special in but she told me she learned a lot. She says it was totally worth it. After her two years she moved over to Memorial West (i think) She told me she loves it there even more because she is working in what she wanted. (labor and mommy)
So question, how long would you be signing on with HCA? Do you have a chance on moving up the specialty ladder faster since its a specialty hospital?
let me know what you decide..Good luck! Hope the little info i got helps.

Broward health
Memorial
HCA
are all 3 different companies.
my buddy from miami took the scholarship for HCA at kendall regional.
She says it is pretty tough- 8:1 at night- and he politics of the unit are not great- she works medsurg, got $6K for a 2 year contract.
I know people from memorial that are very happy there. so don't know how their system works.
but I like my job that it is all computer charting- eventhough sometimes it can be evil too!

Broward Health hospitals are North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point, Coral Springs Medical Center, and Broward General Hospital.
HCA hospitals in my area are Plantation General, University, Northwest, etc. HCA has preceptorships for specialties. I like that HCA is nationwide. However, I'm nervous about working for a private hospital.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I was almost gonna take the HCA scholarship, I was offered by the HCA scholarship lady in north campus $4K for an 18month contract.
I got the money in the mail- went on the interview with the manager at Kendall regional in miami. THen a week later decided to withdraw the scholarship-
my reasoning- I did not want to work with adults. I saw the patient ratio there 8-1 for nights. the nurses there looked very intense. the patients were very old (no offense- I respet any patient young or old, i too will be old someday hopefully).
I did not see myself working there.

Thanks for clearing that up..
Well im glad you made your decision..im sure it was tough, but im sure in the long run your going to see that you made a good decision.. I really want to apply to the Memorial one, because i really want to work in the Joe Dimagio Hospital..I want to work in the neonatal or pediatrics icu..Either way my thing has always been with kids.

IamPatty,
Did you pay a fee or penalty for returning the money and not fulfilling the contract?
My clinical rotations thus far are at North Broward and Imperial Pt. How do you suggest that I get out there and check out the hospitals to see if I want to work there?

Oh not at all. I got the check in the mail, then called the scholarship lady in north campus and told her that I did not want to sign the contract anymore, so she said to return the check in the mail. I returned it- and it goes thru financial aid so you will see it in your account online at BCC site. I kept calling her that I returned the check for 2 weeks because it showed that I owed BCC $$4k dollars!!
talk to the scholarship lady and ask her to see if you can schedule a visit with one of the hospitals that offer the scholarship, just to get a tour of the unit.
I went to kendall regional in miami, for an interview there, her office was in between patients rooms! so I got to walk thru the hall and peak in at patients, walked by the nurses station.... and it was definitely somewhere where I did not want to be.
For example, I did clinicals in joe dimagios, and I would definitely not want to work there! all that paper- I love my computer charting!

This is the latest from the BCC- broward community college website.
http://www.broward.edu/images/ProgramSheets/2127.pdf
according to this site, they do have an admissions test.

My advise to anyone interested is to attend an info session with the Assistant Dean of nursing on the campus they plan to attend. The website doesn't provide a lot of info and what's there may not be accurate. This is the same program sheet that I referred to before I applied. It wasn't correct then either.
