Re: Miami Dade Community College Nursing Students...

Hi, MiamiMom. Congrats and now get ready for the REALLY hard work. It's a good idea to go to advisement at medical campus. Be sure to get a list of the immunizations needed if they will give it to you in advance. Take $25 for each program you intend to apply for, eg generic, part-time, accel. (One can apply to multiple programs at once - this is a mistake I made which cost me 2 semesters of waiting.) I think $100 was also required for something else...can't recall exactly but check the med campus webside from mdc.edu and see what it says about $. They do take checks and charge cards (thank heaven). As I recall, the earlier you apply the better, but not till the day grades are due. Call and find out when the campus is closed between semesters, and go pick up all the forms they might want you to have completed, eg applications and if there is anything else. Take some coins in case you need to go to the library (2nd floor) or Success Center (3rd Floor) to make copies. Don't give them anything you have not made a copy of for yourself! I think there is a vacation week around the end of May, 3 weeks in Aug, and 2 weeks in Dec. where all MDC medical is shut down.
Also do go to the med campus bookstore to get an idea what the books cost...1st semester is about $800 including uniforms, shoes, stethoscope, penlight, and of course BOOKS. The subsequent semesters don't cost that much but the therapy and massages you will need by 2nd semester will make up the difference. (Kidding a little.) I made the mistake of buying books ahead of time based on the listing in the bookstore before the semester started (Miss Try to Anticipate to Beat the Crowd) and ended up buying a couple that weren't required. You won't get the book list till orientation, and it does change between semesters. But as soon as you do get the book list, get right over to bookstore & get them immediately even if you have to wait in line...some people save $ by buying online but I didn't because I couldn't bear stressing out over online shipping & availability issues. So I paid more but had security. If you are getting financial assistance be sure to get that lined up before you try to buy books & supplies, to avoid having to stand in line again. Re standing in line - bring your iPod or Walkman or a magazine, it'll drive you nuts waitng.
PS Your CPR card must be valid through the end of the first semester, minimum.
It seems overwhelming but just figure out what they want, give it to them, and keep copies. Best regards!

Red face Re: Miami Dade Community College Nursing Students...

This thread has been really helpful. Thanks for the info CSP33092.

I might be jumping through hoops if all goes well.

Ok, Uniforms and shoes?!?
Do we have to wear yucky, white, dorky nurse shoes and yucky, white, dorky -not to mention see-through half the time- scrubs?

Or can we just wear any color scrub and tennis shoes--my gut is telling me that the answer to this one is "no"

Oh well.

Pianyfl,

I dropped off my application last month at the Medical Campus. They said I will hear something in June. All my pre-reqs will be completed by the April 29 deadline for the fall term.

A list of the MDC pre reqs are on their site: www.mdc.edu

other helpful sites: www.ratemyprofessor.com and www.pickaprof.com

Thanks Miamimom!

Good for you, I still have to take PHI2604, PPE and Chem lab this summer.
But when I talked to the adviser in Med Campus he told me to put in my application for Fall, I'm not really sure of my chances because those classes ends July 28. I guess I'll wait for the letter hehe.

Thanks and good luck

Re: Miami Dade Community College Nursing Students...

A little update:

I guess I can safely say I made it through the MDC Accelerated program.

We're on our Leadership rotation right now and all we need in order to graduate is to pass the exit (ATI) exam. It was grueling, we lost some people, 52 students initially and ended up with 31 or so; but I think it will be worth it. Good luck to all of you who started in August and to those who will start in January.

Those dorky nurse shoes will save your feet & your knees! The dorkier the better! I wore in school & still do wear a white t shirt or tank top if my top is white, and always a pair of stretchy white bike type shorts under my slacks (if my pants are white) -they absorb sweat too. I color code these undergarments depending on my uniform. Even if they can be a bit warm they protect you from nasty splashes (I've been christened) & just as often prevent freebies when you bend over.

Re: Miami Dade Community College Nursing Students...

Hi Im new in Fl, Im from NYC and I had previously applied to the Generic Prgm, but I have a BA in Health Administration, I was thinking of applying to the Accelerated Prgm. But, Im afraid that my Gpa might be a little low, I completed my Req at NYC which are Eng-B, Anat I C, Anat II B, Micro C, Currently my GPA is a 3.0 in my BA but in my requirements maybe a 2.5 do u think its possible to get in the accelerated program. I was thinking of attending Medvance to complete my LPN since it has been very difficult to get in the RN Pgrm, but Im still thinking about it! what do I need to do to apply for the Accelerated Prgm.

Lizzy

Thank you so much, Who

We took our ATI exit exam and had a 100% passing rate, very cool.

Ltorres, this is a link to the stuff MDC requires, hope it works and I hope it helps you: https://sisvsr.mdc.edu/ps/sheet.aspx
Medical Center Campus-Nursing Website

Btw, don't let your GPA discourage you, I had a pretty low one (2.6) and still got in. It was so low that it actually went UP while in the program heh heh (It's a 3,2 or so right now)

Not everyone who applies and gets accepted decides to join the program so they will have some spots available. Give it a shot.
