you dont' need the chemistry to apply to the accelerated.....just the generic. when applying to the accelerated, transfer in only your As in natural science, if you have 15 credit hours worth......the idea is to transfer in your highest grades for GPA.

otherwise, unfortunately, there's nothing else to do.....sigh. no essays, no interviews, no "i'm a great gal".....there are schools like that out there, that take "you" into account, so if you don't get into MDC, try other ones. heck, try them all now....don't put all your eggs into one basket!

good luck!

Hey Magnesium,

Congrats on getting in. I am applying to MDC accelerated for Jan 09. Do you know whether anyone got accepted with a 3.5. I am really nervous about not getting in because of my G.P.A!!

Also, I have exhausted my stafford loans. Did financial aid give you any more options as far as loans are concerned.

Thanx

Hey Tracie! You will be fine with a 3.5. Some students for this semester got in with a 3.4. I believe as long as you have a 3.5 and above you will be great. Good luck and let everyone know when you get in. I hear the program is rigourous. I start now in August. I just picked my classes and I am insanely nervous.

it all depends on the applicant pool for that particular session....if everyone who applies happens to have 3.9 GPAs for some reason, then, well, i guess 3.5 won't be high enough.....but i don't think that is typically the case, of course :-) i'm sure you'll do fine.

financial aid at MDC leaves something to be desired. they're REAAAAAAALLLY slow on the draw....i still haven't gotten even a speck of aid from them, and tuition was due today!!!! so plan to go privately looking for loans, scholarships, etc......MDC will have some scholarship info, i'm sure, as do lots of websites (do a search on this website and you'll find lots of tips)....i just don't really qualify for any, since i'm not a very unusual nursing demographic: single white childless female with a job and no special affiliations, ethnicities, religions, languages, abilities, etc.....yer average joe LOL LOL.

just don't count on MDC to walk you through it. be proactive and good luck :-)

Re: Miami Dade College

Hey Mag, are you in school right now? Have you been in the nursing program? Can you tell me anything about it or are you starting now?

Re: Miami Dade College

I'm starting August 27th. I'll definitely keep you informed as i go. there's a long thread somewhere else on here from someone who's going through the generic RN (3rd semester i think, right now). His name is akspudus or something like that. He's very helpful and informative, but some of his info might not apply to the accelerated.

Re: Miami Dade College

Well I am in the full-time generic. Yes I have talked to him before. He is the ONLY person who looks at nursing school in a bright school. I mean I swear I have not heard anything nice about nursing at all. Nothing good at all. That scares me. He is one of the only that says that the program in Miami Dade is in fact doable. The rest are just horror stories, which scares me. You just have one chance and that is it. After that you are done.

Re: Miami Dade College

Hey Mag,

Thanks for the info. Have you been able to meet the rest of your classmates? Also, do all the accelerated students take their classes together at the same time or are you mixed in with generic students?? We will definitely be keeping in touch because I pray to get in for January.

Re: Miami Dade College

I do not know if the generic students and the accelerated students are in fact in the same classrooms.

I do not believe this is the case. You see some classes have a limit of only 10 students! I was shocked! Needless to say the first ten minutes after orientation that was it! ALL the generic students had taken ALL the seats for most of the classes. You really have to register quickly.

Very limited space and everyone is registering at the same time for the same class. Looking at it from this point it would be unfair if the accelerated students came after and found ALL the seats taken for the classes. This tells me that no, it should not be the same classes.

I actually found a friend from high school, and we already started our study group. We registered for ALL of our classes together so that we could be of emotional support. I am very stressed on how difficult the program actually is, and to think you will be doing it in a shorter time frame just blows me away. The accelerated is even more difficult then the generic full time students.

I hear that students are always crying or failing, it scares me, but I want to stay calm and see how it goes. I am considering emailing my future professors to see what is going to be in the first week of class, so that I may buy the books and try to get ahead on the reading. A lot of material is covered, I can not imagine the accelerated, but it is doable. If it was not then the program would not exist.

What I have noticed is that the faculty for the nursing program is rather pushy, and a bit inconsiderate. Get ready for that part! They are also very disorganized, and they expect the students to bend to their ways even if the mistake is theirs.

I have noticed some flaws in the system, but I remain positive. I just pray the professors are not as bad. I pray they are good teachers, and considerate of the students. I don't want them to be easy, but I do not want them to be rude and inconsiderate either. After orientation I have a couple of worries.

Re: Miami Dade College

Im a nurse at south miami hospital. Most of the Miami dade students i see are clueless. The school does not teach real world nursing. The students only want to talk to their boyfriends on their cells during clinicals. I like to have students if they are willing to work. Most of them think their too pretty to get their hands dirty!!
