Re: I finally applied to MDC ADN prgm!

The RN program at MDC sucks...a lot of changes and making students' life miserable...It's one of the hardest to get in, to stay and the hardest to get out..

Honestly, I lost faith in MDC nursing program because of what students went thru just to get out...they keep changing the rules and regulations..

in short..weed out students on the 3rd, 4th semester..

I stopped recommending MDC to family and friends who want to get their nursing degree.

Good luck to you

IDK what it takes to get into that program.. because they never wanted me as much as I wanted to be in that program.

I ended up at BCC- and as long as you do what you need to do- you will be fine there.
and the rules- pretty much stay the same- no changes in a long long long time.
they just need to get with the program and let students use calculators during math tests-(BCC)

Not sure what it takes to get in either. All I know is I got accepted the first time I applied. I also know most of my class mates got in the first time they applied.
For my class, the lowest GPA taken was a 3.51. I do know that the lowest GPA taken changes from class to class depending on the GPA's of those that applied.

Not sure what your big deal is about calculators...most nursing math can be done quite easily without a calculator. Except maybe body surface area...we can only use their calculators and they are the most basic type I have ever seen.

As far as changing the rules....I only know of one rule that was changed while I have bee a nursing student. The rule that was changed actually was to the students benefit. Every other rule or policy is well dictated in the policy manual that is given to you in orientation. I would be willing to bet most students that complain about the rules..have never bothered to dig that little booklet up and read it.

Yes, we have lost quite a few students. Or should I say left quite a few students behind. Some of those students are still in the program...albeit one semester behind...but they may still graduate and go on to become awesome RN's. Some of the students are no longer in the program...and those are the students that probably should not have been admitted to begin with.
I would also mention that everything they teach and test you on is laid right out in the student curriculum manual they have you buy at the beginning of the program. Honestly folks...if you read what they tell you to read...there are no surprises.

I just started semester 3. MDC calls it Level 2. The professors definitely have a different attitude. As a perspective RN...we have developed dramatically since those first days in Fundamentals lecture. I feel like there is a little more respect between myself and my professors. They are starting to see us and treat us as if we are going to be RN's in 6-7 months. There are more expectations of us as we develop. Some students are sooo used to being coddled or having their hand held through everything.....that they are a little freaked out. The umbilicus is being cut.

Maybe BCC develops better RN's. Who knows. If they do...I bow towards the North in respect. Otherwise....to those that didn't get accepted by MDC and found success somewhere else....congratulations on your success...sorry about MDC's rejections now get over it and move on. To those that didn't find success somewhere else.... my condolences. To those that are perspective MDC nursing students....best of luck.

Re: I finally applied to MDC ADN prgm!

a calculator is a calculator- no matter if it's the most basic one.

I wish I had the simplest calculator when going to BCC-

I know I know I know that our math is doable w/o it, i did it, and I went 2 years without it! heck at work I have to do my math on a paper and pen-

but the point is that it is 2008 and BCC STILL is not allowing even the most simplest calculator in the classroom!!!!!!!

I am proud of myself to have completed something that I wanted to do forever- I'm over MDC not taking me in...... and as a matter of fact, I am very glad they didn't take me in. I hate going to that area of town. there are always homeless people around, and crossing that street (the same street where ryder trauma is)! augh, I felt very unsafe going there when I took HSC class a few years back- the people drive so fast there- and they never put a crosswalk for students there.

I believe that EVERYTHING happens for a reason, God has a different path for each one of us, and for some reason, I was not accepted at MDC- but BCC was willing to give this homegirl a chance- I took it and was successful at it.

God willing soon enough I will start the RN-BSN program at FIU and continue on to my career.

I don't think that any program develops better RN's than the other. I know wonderful nurses from all types of programs. Nova, FIU, BARRY, UM, MDC and even unaccredited Keiser college

but anyways, to those that were one of miami dade's "Chosen ones" congratulations to you all.

Re: I finally applied to MDC ADN prgm!

BTW when I took the NCLEX-RN I was so nervous about the math. I ended up getting 3 math problems, with a calculator, and I had no idea how to do it. I tried using the calculator, but just didn't know where to start, I was stuck and had a brain freeze! the third math, I was able to do it fine, then checked with the calculator- I did not get more math after my 3rd- thank God. but never the less, if the NCLEX-RN lets you use calculators, then nursing school should let you use calculators as well.
