Does anyone know how long they have predicted the nursing shortage will be in the state of Connecticut? Just curious to see how long nurses will be needed, by the time I get my degree there will be probably be too many nurses!

i think you're pretty safe in being able to get a job when you graduate. I know that there are a huge number of nurses who are/will be retiring..the baby boomer nurses.

there's been a nursing shortage in CT for as long as I can remember, and there is no word of and end in sight. Hey, better for you and I, I suppose..right

I agree.. I know firsthand that there is a definite shortage of nurses in this area. Nursing schools are being too "choosey" for the shortage to continue. They aren't educating enough nurses to overcome this. Yes, all the baby boomers are retiring which is sad in itself seeing as how they are the best nurses in the medical feild by bar. But we do not have enough nurses to keep up with them starting to fill up facilities and hospitals. It's scary... but true

Thanks for your replies, I feel better!!! I won't be able to start nursing school until 3 more years......I need my littlest child who is now 16 months, to be in school.

From everything I've heard in the news coverage over the last couple of years, it seems to be a long-term problem. But so many schools are ramping up to prep more grads that I too get nervous - it'll be a year or two before I'm out and practicing also.

What I haven't heard much about is any real analysis of what the major underlying factors are. How much is due to overwhelming hospital working conditions driving experienced nurses out, and how much is merely the fact that older nurses are retiring and too few younger folks are drawn to the profession? I'd be much happier going into this thinking that the problem is mainly replacing an aging workforce in the next 10 years or so.

The thought of signing up to replace my elder and wiser predecessors who've run screaming is a very scary one. Sigh.

This is why I left Massachusetts, they wouldn't hire me anywhere but in LTC. So I am in New Mexico, but I miss the East. I have a CT license and would love to go back after I get some needed hospital experience over here and maybe my BSN. So hopefully on the jobs I see on Career Builder will still be there!
