Since there have been so many threads started on this, thought that a sticky would answer most questions about this.

1. You must endorse to California, you do not transfer a license. You will continue to maintain an active license in the original state until it expires if you do not renew it.

2. You need to follow the License by Endorsement application, you can find it on CA BRN website.

3. California requires a completed set of transcripts from your nursing school before they will issue you a permanent license.

4. They need verification from your state licensing authority. If CA has received that or the state is part of Nursys, then you can actually go to the BRN in Sacramento and get a temporary license issued that same day.

5. Otherwise, expect it to take about one month for you to receive the license once they have received all documents.

One month? Dream on...the California Board of Nursing doesn't even want to correspond with you about licensure until you have waited at least six weeks. I turned in everything on July 13th (including the set of fingerprints that you failed to mention) and as of today, November 6th, have still not received my license. According to Sacramento, the Department of Justice is currently holding up my licensure process because they have not cleared my fingerprints. So it is literally out of the state's hands when you reach this point in the endorsement process.

Sorry, but the average wait of time is one month, and same day if you go to Sacramento. But you are having issues with your fingerprints, that is why things are delayed, that is not the fault of the CA BRN.

Fingerprints are well known as being required by CA, and if you are going to the BRN office in Sacramento, you can do the Live Scan and get a temporary license issued that day.

But again, your problems are not pointed at the BRN, but at your fingerprints. That is not the norm.

Wow.. 4 months is a really long time. I have been waiting for 3 months.
Are you going to apply for the temp. license? I am not sure why the fingerprinting process takes so much longer in Cali. I am wondering if the FBI has received my fingerprint cards from the Cali BON. I have spoken to Cali BON and they say it can even take up to 6 months - very cavalier about the whole thing. Makes me wonder if they just want me to pay for the temp. license -- LOL! From what I have read, no more than 8 wks. is the norm, but these people were not applying for endorsement.

What does endorse mean? I know it means sign, but that doesn't fit in this context.

It means to use your initial license in one state to get a new license in another state (ie. not transferring, since you keep both, but similar)

So if I pass the nclex in PA in July then I move to california I'll have to wait for at least 3 months to get my license endorsed? So I won't be able to work for 3 months? If I get hte interim permit will i be able to work then? I can't wait for 3-4 months to geet the license endorsed and not be working the whole time. Is there any way to get around this by using the IP?

If you trained in the US, then it is just a few weeks.........As soon as CA BRN receives verification of your license in the state where you went for initial licensure, and if you are so inclined, you can go up to Sacramento and get a tempoary license issued that day.

If you have taken the NCLEX exam, then the IP is not even a possibility for you. That is in effect only for those that have met requirements for licensure except having taken the NCLEX exam.

Not sure why you have been waiting for so long........did your nursing school submit your transcripts, even if twenty years ago, they will not issue a permanent license without that. Problems with firngerprints? It usually does not take any longer, unless there is an issue with the fingerprints that they are investigating.

If you are anxious to be working in CA, and they have verification from the state where you are licensed, you can get a temporary license issued that same day.

Even foreign nurses that have endorsed get a temporary license rather quickly.
