hey fellow students
I got into both san francisco states BSN program and also Cal State East Bay Program. I was wondering if anyone knew the positives and negatives of either or both of the programs. I dont know one person from either..Any help would be much appreciated!!!!!

I moved your post to the California Forum for the most responses. The Pre-Nursing Student Forum is good for general questions about completing prerequisite classes and the like, but this forum should work better for information specific to California schools.

I've spent time at UCSF with various family members and many of the nurses there went to SF State. If Cal State East Bay is also Cal State Hayward, they have a good program but I think SF's is better.

Check the NCLEX pass rates... they don't mean EVERYTHING, but they can be a good hint.

Check also the retention rate. If there is a high pass rate but low retention rate, it's not good.

Congratulations!

I have friends in both programs, and they both sound very stong/very similar. Both complain about the lack of info until the last minute (not much hand holding in the CSU system); both have co-students that they wonder, "how the heck did that looney get in the program." (the drawback to using a points only based evaluating system).

Both have made great life-long friends. Both are blossoming into excellent health care providers and serve as my mentors even though they are much younger.

Both colleges will give you a BSN from a well respected program. However, if I didn't already have a degree from a college with good name recognition, I would lean towards SF just cuz I just like the city/name better. But really, that's not important. Most important would be commute time. I think commute would factor into my decision more than anything.

I passed up on UCSF and Samuel Merritt because of CSU East Bay (Concord Campus) is right in my back yard. I'm looking forward to starting end of September.

WOW Congratulations! I went to SFSU, albeit 100 years ago. The program is smaller and even more selective now than when I went. But it is a long established program. I think East Bay is relatively new. I of course am prejudiced but would vote for SFSU. Where I work we get students from SFSU and they always seem well prepared and many of the nurses I work with went there also. A nice dilemma to be in!

Waiting in line for a college RN program at #401 to apply.
I'm not sure which career college to go for to avoid the 2 year waiting lists at the community/university programs. Are the career college students as well trained as the university/community students in programs for LVN/RN training? Is there a better career college, NCP versus Unitek?
